Implantable medical devices that can facilitate therapy transport to localized sites are being developed for a number of diverse applications, including the treatment of diseases such as diabetes and cancer, and tissue regeneration after myocardial infraction. These implants can take the form of an encapsulation device which encases therapy in the form of drugs, proteins, cells, and bioactive agents, in semi-permeable membranes. Such implants have shown some success but the nature of these devices pose a barrier to the diffusion of vital factors, which is further exacerbated upon implantation due to the foreign body response (FBR).

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Leech, as a traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of blood circulation and blood stasis, was also widely used to cure pulmonary fibrosis in China. In clinical practice, some traditional Chinese medicine preparation such as Shui Zhi Xuan Bi Hua Xian Tang and Shui Zhi Tong Luo Capsule composed of leech, could improve the clinical symptoms and pulmonary function in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). However, the material basis of the leech in the treatment of IPF were not yet clear.

Cell microencapsulation is a more widely accepted area of biological encapsulation. In most cases, it involves fixing cells in polymer scaffolds or semi-permeable hydrogel capsules, providing the environment for protecting cells, allowing the exchange of nutrients and oxygen, and protecting cells against the attack of the host immune system by preventing the entry of antibodies and cytotoxic immune cells. Hydrogel encapsulation provides a three-dimensional (3D) environment similar to that experienced in vivo, so it can maintain normal cellular functions to produce tissues similar to those in vivo.

Compartmentalization can serve different purposes such as the protection of biological active substances from the environment, or the creation of a unique combination of biomolecules for diagnostic, therapeutic, or other bioengineering applications. We present a method for direct encapsulation of molecules in biocompatible and semi-permeable microcapsules made from low-molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEG-DA 258). Microcapsules are produced using a non-planar PDMS microfluidic chip allowing for one-step production of water-in-PEG-DA 258-in-water double-emulsions, which are polymerized with UV light into a poly-PEG-DA 258 shell.

is a candidate biocontrol agent that has been shown to reduce phytoplasma-related disease symptoms in grapevines and periwinkle plants. While a crude filtrate prepared from can inhibit mollicute growth, the specific growth parameters for this bacterium, necessary to enhance this protective inhibitory response, remain unknown. Moreover, the separation of filtrate preparations from bacterial cells via centrifugation and filtration is laborious and time-consuming.
