Galactose is converted to galactonic acid in vivo in man. Galactonate was isolated from the urine of galactosemia patients who had been given galactose orally. The identity of the galactonate was established by gas-liquid chromatography and by the preparation of derivatives.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory respiratory disease that affects millions globally and poses a serious public health challenge. Current therapeutic strategies, including corticosteroids, are constrained by variable patient responses and adverse effects. In this study, a polyphenolic extract derived from the Tibetan medicinal plant Trimen (SRT) was employed and shown to improve experimentally (ovalbumin + cigarette smoke, OVA + CS) induced asthma in rats.

D-galactonate, a widely prevalent sugar acid, was first reported as a nutrient source for enteric bacteria in the 1970s. Since then, decades of research enabled a description of the modified Entner-Doudoroff pathway involved in its degradation and reported the structural and biochemical features of its metabolic enzymes, primarily in Escherichia coli K-12. However, only in the last few years, the D-galactonate transporter has been characterized, and the regulation of the dgo operon, encoding the structural genes for the transporter and enzymes of D-galactonate metabolism, has been detailed.

The pathogen Paracoccidioides lutzii (Pb01) is found in South America countries Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Brazil, especially in the central, west, and north regions of the latter. It belongs to the Ajellomycetaceae family, Onygenales order, and is typically thermodimorphic, presenting yeast cells when it grows in animal tissues, but mycelia when in the environment, where it produces the infectious propagule. This fungus is one of the etiologic agents of Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), the most important endemic fungal infection in Latin America.

Pseudomonas strains IT-194P, IT-215P, IT-P366 and IT-P374 were isolated from the rhizospheres of wheat grown in soils sampled from different fields (some of them known to be disease-suppressive) located near Mionica, Serbia. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA genes and of whole genome sequences showed that these strains belong to two potentially new species, one containing strains IT-P366 and IT-194P and clustering (whole genome analysis) next to P. umsongensis DSM16611, and another species containing strains IT-P374 and IT-215P and clustering next to P.
