Low-Cost Intrinsic Flame-Retardant Bio-Based High Performance Polyurethane and its Application in Triboelectric Nanogenerators.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

Flammability is a significant challenge in polymer-based electronics. In this regard, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have enabled a safe means for harvesting mechanical energy for conversion into electrical energy. However, most existing polymers used for TENGs are sourced from petroleum-based raw materials and are highly flammable, which can further accelerate the spread of fire and harm the ecological environment.

The bioluminescent European brittle star Amphiura filiformis produces blue light at the arm-spine level thanks to a biochemical reaction involving coelenterazine as substrate and a Renilla-like luciferase as an enzyme. This echinoderm light production depends on a trophic acquisition of the coelenterazine substrate. Without an exogenous supply of coelenterazine, this species loses its luminous capabilities.

Giant Power Output from Ionic/electronic Hybrid Nanocomposite Thermoelectric Converter Under Constant Temperature Gradient.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

November 2024

Department of Materials Science & Engineering, National University of Singapore, 9 Engineering Drive 1, Singapore, 117574, Singapore.

Thermoelectric (TE) materials that directly convert heat to electricity are of great significance for sustainable development. However, TE generators (TEGs) made from electronic TE materials suffer from low Seebeck coefficient (10-10 mV K). While ionic TE capacitors based on ionic conductors exhibit high thermovoltage (10-10 mV K), ionic TE capacitors provide power discontinuously only under variation of temperature gradient as ions cannot transport across electrodes to external circuits.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have found many massive-galaxy candidates in the early Universe, stretching further back in time and at lower brightness levels than previously seen.
  • These findings initially posed challenges to the Λ cold dark-matter model, but the new study's results show no significant conflicts when accounting for spectroscopic redshifts.
  • The research highlights three ultra-massive galaxies that convert a notably high percentage of baryons into stars, suggesting they play a significant role in cosmic star-formation rates at redshifts 5 to 6.

Recent studies have shown that electrical systems in wind power conversion are subject to a 67 % failure rate, and conventional three-phase generators are considered to be the most sensitive to these faults. Induction generator current harmonics are a major source of torque ripples causing acoustic noise and vibrations. These ripples can progressively increase under faulty operating conditions.
