This study analyses the radiological and clinical results according to the two techniques of unilateral and bilateral balloon kyphoplasty in osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. Fifty-two patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures occurring at the thoracolumbar junction were enrolled in this study. All patients were classified into two groups; group I was treated with a unilateral approach and group II with a bilateral approach. The Cobb angle was measured each time to evaluate the kyphotic angle during the pre- and post-operative periods and at last follow-up, and a 10-point visual analog scale for pain was recorded at the same time. We found that the bilateral approach had a greater advantage in the reduction of kyphosis and the loss of reduction was less than the unilateral approach for the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures.

Osteoporotic vertebral fractures are among the most common fractures associated with osteoporosis. Approximately 80% of cases heal by fusion in the natural process without the need for surgery, and if we include the so-called "incidental vertebral body fractures," which are discovered by chance during radiography, the frequency of prolongation of back pain due to pseudoarthrosis or delayed-onset neurological deficits is low. However, the prognosis of osteoporotic vertebral fractures is affected by the number of fractured vertebrae.

Vertebroplasty has shown excellent analgesic effects in patients with osteoporotic vertebral fractures. In Japan, percutaneous vertebroplasty, balloon kyphoplasty, and vertebral body stenting are commonly performed. All of these techniques require precise transpedicular vertebral puncture and complete cement filling without leakage.

The objective of this study is to fabricate and develop hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) hydrogel (HG)-based composite bone cements with incorporation of hydroxyapatite (HA), beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP), and with/without polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) for vertebroplasty. For animal study, twenty female Wister rats (250-300 g, 12 weeks of age) were divided into four groups including a two non-ovariectomy (NOVX) groups and two ovariectomy (OVX)-induced osteoporosis groups. Two prepared biocomposites including HG/β-TCP/HA and HG/β-TCP/HA/PMMA were injected into the tibial defects of both OVX and NOVX rats for evaluating in vivo osteogenesis after 12 weeks.

Unlabelled: Using the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink, our cohort study matched 237,297 individuals with hearing loss (HL) to 829,431 without HL. The study found an 8-10% higher risk of major osteoporotic fracture in individuals with HL compared to those without. Additionally, within the HL cohort, we identified risk factors for potential inclusion in fracture risk models.

Subsequent vertebral fracture (SVF) is a common and refractory complication after percutaneous vertebral augmentation (PVA) for osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF). Computed tomography (CT)-based Hounsfeld units (HU) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based vertebral bone quality (VBQ) score can evaluate osteoporosis quantitatively, hyperlipidemia(HLP) might affect measurement result of VBQ score. The primary objective of this study is to compare the predictive capabilities of HU and VBQ for SVF, and to clarify the impact of hyperlipidemia on the predictive abilities.
