While the organic and biologically active components in tobacco smoke are well characterized, it is also important to know which inorganic elements are contained in tobacco. In the present paper, the determination of Be, Na, Mg, K, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Sr, Mo, Ag, Cd, Sn, Cs, Ba, Hg, Tl, Pb, Th and U in tobacco leaves was studied by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Samples were digested in a mixture of nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide by closed-vessel microwave digestion. The instrumental operating conditions were optimized for the measurement of above 17 elements. Ge, In and Bi were used as internal standard elements to compensate matrix effect and signal drift. The precision of measurement ranges from 1.28% to 9.18% in terms of relative standard deviation. The recoveries for spiking tobacco samples and the limits of detection are in the range of 93.64%-108.9% and 0.356 3 ng x L(-1)-1.725 microg x L(-1), respectively. The results of experiment show that the method can meet the requirements of trace analysis.

This study aimed to probe the influence of amylose in starch granules on starch modification. Part of the amylose from sorghum starch was removed through warm water leaching, and the samples were then microwaved. The effects of treatments on starch structure, physicochemical properties, and digestibility were researched.

A rapid and efficient ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) procedure followed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was developed for the determination of 14 rare earth elements (REEs) (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu), along with yttrium (Y) and scandium (Sc), in coffee samples. The method was validated using certified reference material (NIST SRM 1547), recovery tests at four fortification levels, and comparisons with microwave-assisted digestion (MAD). Excellent accuracy and precision were achieved, with recovery rates ranging from 80.

Objectives: Thermal ablation (TA) is an alternative to lobectomy for thyroid nodules (TNs). While it is believed that thyroid function remains stable after TA for cystic TNs, the impact of TA on solid TNs, especially the large ones, is less explored. This study investigates changes in thyroid hormones after TA in patients with solid-predominant TNs and identifies potential risk factors for thyroid dysfunction after TA.

This study evaluated the effects of malic acid vacuum microwave preconditioning (MVMP) on lotus root (LR) by examining its moisture content, dielectric properties, microstructure, and starch characteristics, including modifications in starch structure and composition. Dielectric properties and LF-NMR indicated that the dielectric constant (ε') was closely associated to moisture content and state, while changes in water migration depended on microwave power and the dielectric loss factor (ε″). Increased microwave power and malic acid concentration resulted in microstructural damage (indentation and breakage of starch granules) and starch hydrolysis into smaller particles.
