Lead (Pb) has been used for centuries in currency, transportation, building materials, cookware, makeup, and medicine. Mining of Pb in the Roman era matched the ever-increasing demand for metallurgy, transportation, and industry, resulting in a marked deposition of human activity in the geologic record. Researchers use global snowpacks and ice cores to study the historic anthropogenic use of Pb and subsequent deposition into the environment.

Impact of civil war on the land cover in Myanmar.

Environ Monit Assess

January 2025

College of Geoscience and Surveying Engineering, China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing), Beijing, China.

Exploring the response relationship between civil war, population and land cover change is of great practical significance for social stability in Myanmar. However, the ongoing civil war in Myanmar hinders direct understanding of the situation on the ground, which in turn limits detailed study of the intricate relationship between the dynamics of the civil war and its impact on population and land. Therefore, this paper explores the response relationship between civil war conflict and population and land cover change in Myanmar from 2010 to 2020 from the perspective of remote sensing using the land cover data we produced, the open spatial demographics data, and the armed conflict location and event data project.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV; family ) infections cause >40,000 human deaths annually. Zoonotic infections predominantly originate from ungulates and occasionally from rats, highlighting the zoonotic potential of rodent-associated hepeviruses. We conducted host genomic data mining and uncovered two genetically divergent rodent-associated hepeviruses, and two bat-associated hepeviruses genetically related to known bat-associated strains.

Chemical and boron isotope characteristics of snow in the qiyi glacier, Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Environ Pollut

February 2025

Shaanxi Key Laboratory of Earth Surface System and Environmental Carrying Capacity, College of Urban and Environmental Science, Northwest University, Xi'an 710127, China; State Key Laboratory of Loess and Quaternary Geology, Institute of Earth Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xi'an 710061, China. Electronic address:

Snow is a valuable carrier for recording atmospheric information and snowmelt constitutes a crucial hydrological resource for ecosystem sustainability and human activities. The agriculture, industry, livelihoods and ecological security in the Hexi Corridor are dependent on the support of glacier snowmelt in Qilian Mountains of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. We investigated the main water-soluble ions, trace elements and boron isotopes composition of snow at different altitudes in the Qiyi Glacier of the Qilian Mountains from 12 to 23, Aug.

Local contributions and climate change effects on organochlorine pesticide levels in soil and sediments in Svalbard.

Environ Pollut

January 2025

College of Ocean and Earth Sciences, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361102, China; State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361102, China; Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory for Coastal Ecology and Environmental Studies, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361102, China. Electronic address:

The Arctic region, including Svalbard, faces unique environmental challenges from the presence and persistence of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), pollutants known for their long-range atmospheric transport and potential local sources. In Svalbard, the melting of sea ice and glaciers due to climate change may release OCPs trapped over decades, while human activities in the area could contribute additional local contamination. This study aimed to identify and quantify different sources of OCPs in soil and marine sediments at Svalbard.
