Article Abstract

Unlabelled: The purpose of this study was to identify predictors of the distance achieved during a 6-minute walk test and a 12-minute walk/run test (Cooper test) in obese children and adolescents and to evaluate the influence of a residential treatment on the association of these predictors with the distance. A search of the Revalidation Centre Zeepreventorium (De Haan, Belgium) medical records database of all children and adolescents (age 10 to 18 yrs) treated for obesity between September 2003 and February 2006, revealed 65 charts with all relevant data (anthropometrical, maximal graded exercise, lung function, 6-minute walk test and 12-minute walk/run test) at admission as well as after 3 months treatment. The multidisciplinary treatment has a positive influence on anthropometrical variables, endurance capacity, vital capacity, and residual volume (p < 0.05). The distance covered during the 6-minute walk test and the 12-minute walk/run test is correlated with all anthropometrical data and peak VO2 (p < 0.05). After 3 months of treatment, bivariate correlation was stronger for almost every parameter compared to admission. Following a stepwise regression, BMI z-score is a dominant predictor of both field tests at admission and after 3 months treatment. VO2peak contributes only significantly in the 12-minute walk/run test at admission.

Conclusion: In obese children and adolescents BMI z-score is the most dominant predictor of the variability in performances on the 6-minute walk test and the 12-minute walk/run test at admission as well as after 3 months of treatment.

The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between a field test assessing aerobic capacity (namely, the 12 minute-walk/run test, 12m-WRT) and the performance of students of distinct school-grade levels at two different working memory (WM)-related tasks. Forty participants (21 males, 19 females, mean age 19.18 ± 6.

Objective: To evaluate Cooper 12-minute run/walk test (CT12) as a one-time estimate of cardiorespiratory fitness and marker of fitness change compared with treadmill fitness testing in young children with persistent asthma.

Design: A cohort of urban children with asthma participated in the asthma and exercise program and a subset completed pre- and postintervention fitness testing.

Setting: Treadmill fitness testing was conducted by an exercise physiologist in the fitness laboratory at an academic children's hospital.

Influence of excess adiposity on exercise fitness and performance in overweight children and adolescents.

Developmental Endocrinology Branch, National Institute on Child Health and Human Development, National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services, Bethesda, Maryland, USA.

Objective: Relatively little is known about how excess body mass affects adolescents' capacity to perform sustained exercise. We hypothesized that most of the difficulty that severely overweight adolescents have with sustained exercise occurs because the metabolic costs of moving excess mass result in use of a high proportion of their total oxygen reserve.

Methods: We compared results from a maximal cycle ergometry fitness test in 129 severely overweight adolescents who had BMIs of 41.

Rehabilitation Medicine Department, Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, MD 20892, USA.

Background And Purpose: Little is known about the methods used to assess the physical fitness of adolescents who are overweight. We investigated the relationship between walk/run performance and cardiorespiratory fitness in adolescents who are overweight.

Subjects: Eight African-American adolescents (5 female, 3 male) and 10 Caucasian adolescents (5 female, 5 male) who were overweight (mean age=14.
