A series of random copolymers with different beta-cyclodextrin contents were synthesized by radical copolymerization of MMA with a monovinyl beta-CD monomer. The copolymers were characterized with IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, DSC, and TGA. Based on these copolymers, their nanoparticles were prepared by using DMF, water, and acetone as solvents. Aqueous dispersions of the nanoparticles were further obtained by dialysis against water. Zetasizer Nano-ZS dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy were employed to characterize the nanoparticles. Using camptothecin as a model drug molecule, the encapsulation efficiency and release behavior of the nanoparticles were investigated.

Over the past few decades, significant efforts have been dedicated to advancing technologies for the removal of micropollutants from water. Achieving complete pure water with a single treatment process is challenging and nearly impossible. One promising approach among various alternatives is adopting hybrid technology, which is considered as a win-win technology.

High Areal Loading Silicon Nanoparticle-Based Lithium-Ion Batteries.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

Electrical & Computer Engineering Department, Montana State University, Bozeman, Montana 59717, United States.

Interfacial mechanical stability between silicon (Si) and the current collector is crucial when high areal-loading of Si is demanded as intense stress develops at the interface due to its extreme volume alteration during the lithiation-delithiation process. Therefore, we propose using a thin, rough, porous, and highly conductive carbon nanotube network (CNT-N) as a buffer layer between the Si and current collector that provides abundant anchor sites for Si nanoparticles. The strong and elastic CNT-N, which is not involved directly in the lithiation process, reduces stress at interfaces between the Si and CNT-N and the CNT-N and current collector.

Sonodynamic therapy, a treatment modality recently widely used, is capable of disrupting the tumor microenvironment by inducing immunogenic cell death (ICD) and enhancing antitumor immunity during immunotherapy. Erdafitinib, an inhibitor of the fibroblast growth factor receptor, has demonstrated potential benefits for treating bladder cancer. However, Erdafitinib shows effectiveness in only a small number of patients, and the majority of patients responding positively to the medication have "immune-cold" tumors.

Biomimetic Silk Nanoparticle Manufacture: Calcium Ion-Mediated Assembly.

ACS Biomater Sci Eng

January 2025

Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, University of Strathclyde, 161 Cathedral St., Glasgow G4 0RE,Scotland,U.K.

Silk has emerged as an interesting candidate among protein-based nanocarriers due to its favorable properties, including biocompatibility and a broad spectrum of processing options to tune particle critical quality attributes. The silk protein conformation during storage in the middle silk gland of the silkworm is modulated by various factors, including the most abundant metallic ion, calcium ion (Ca). Here, we report spiking of liquid silk with calcium ions to modulate the silk nanoparticle size.

The ionizable lipid component of lipid nanoparticle (LNP) formulations is essential for mRNA delivery by facilitating endosomal escape. Conventionally, these lipids are synthesized through complex, multistep chemical processes that are both time-consuming and require significant engineering. Furthermore, the development of new ionizable lipids is hindered by a limited understanding of the structure-activity relationships essential for effective mRNA delivery.
