A total of 174 lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains isolated from dairy and cereal products were screened for the production of exopolysaccharides (EPS). Therefore, a rapid screening method was developed based on ultrafiltration and gel permeation chromatography. Furthermore, a screening through the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed with primer pairs targeting different genes involved in EPS production. Nine isolates produced a homopolysaccharide of the glucan type, whereas only one strain produced a heteropolysaccharide. The production of a glucan by a strain of Lactococcus lactis and the production of a heteropolysaccharide by a strain of Lactobacillus curvatus are reported for the first time. The PCR screening revealed many positive strains. For three of the ten EPS-producing strains, no corresponding genes could be detected. Furthermore, a lot of strains possessed one or more eps genes but did not produce an EPS. Therefore, a screening on the molecular level should always be accompanied by another screening method that is able to distinguish true EPS producer strains from non-producing ones. Statistical analysis did not reveal any relationship between the type and origin of the strains, the presence or absence of a capsular polysaccharide or EPS, and the presence or absence of eps genes.

Background: Low-volume hypertonic solutions, such as half-molar lactate (LAC), may be a potential treatment used for fluid resuscitation. This study aimed to evaluate the underlying cardiovascular effects and mechanisms of LAC infusion compared to sodium-matched hypertonic sodium chloride (SAL).
Methods: Eight healthy male participants were randomized in a controlled, single-blinded, crossover study.

The development of optical sensors for label-free quantification of cell parameters has numerous uses in the biomedical arena. However, using current optical probes requires the laborious collection of sufficiently large datasets that can be used to calibrate optical probe signals to true metabolite concentrations. Further, most practitioners find it difficult to confidently adapt black box chemometric models that are difficult to troubleshoot in high-stakes applications such as biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

This study focuses on the preparation and characterization of platelet membrane biomimetic nanocarriers (P-PLGA NPs) and investigates their interactions with the transplacental barrier. Poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles (PLGA NPs) were coated with platelet membrane (PLTM) to construct P-PLGA NPs. Additionally, fluorinated polyethylenimine (F-PEI) was grafted onto PLGA NPs to prepare F-PEI-PLGA NPs, which were compared with PLGA NPs.

Background: Cervical cancer is a major health burden in females worldwide, available studies indicated that sex-determining region Y-box 2 (SOX2) is closely related to the malignant phenotypes of multiple cancers including cervical cancer. However, the underlying mechanisms were blurred.
Experimental Procedures: A bioinformatics analysis was conducted to investigate the clinical correlation between SOX2 and cervical cancer.
