Published: September 2007

Objective: Cardiac ascites remains a rare entity with unique clinical and pathogenetic features that are not adequately recognized by clinicians. The purpose of this study was to contribute towards elucidating the nature of cardiac ascites.

Material And Methods: We describe a series of 26 ascitic fluid samples from eight patients with cardiac ascites that were referred and further evaluated for the etiology and nature of their ascites.

Results: In all samples ascitic fluid was an exudate with an increased serum-ascitic fluid albumin gradient, a pattern unique in ascites. Other causes of ascites were excluded, often through a protracted differential diagnostic procedure.

Conclusions: The unique pattern of cardiac ascites should allow for rapid diagnosis and characterization: The clinical implications of furosemide use in its response and biochemical properties warrant further description.

Ascites syndrome (AS) is a deadly condition in fast-growing chickens, preceded by pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), where the angiotensin II type 1 receptor (ATR1) plays a role. We investigated whether allicin (ALLI), a garlic derivative, could (a) interact with broiler ATR1, (b) affect ascites-related traits [haematocrit content (Hct%), blood oxygen saturation (SaO), and the right-to-total ventricular weight ratio (RV:TV)], (c) modify ATR1 expression in the lung, heart, and liver, alongside ascites mortality and growth performance in Ross 308 broilers raised at high altitude and under cold temperatures promoting PAH/AS. Three groups (n = 70 each) were studied: 0-ALLI (untreated), 1-ALLI (allicin 1 mg/kg body weight/daily at 14-27 days of age by oral-oesophageal route), and 2.

Cause of death (COD) in POEMS (polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathies, monoclonal protein and skin changes) syndrome is not well described. We investigated COD in patients with POEMS syndrome treated at Mayo Clinic between 2000 and 2022. Of the 89 deaths, 49 patients had known COD and were the subject of this study.

Persistent and severe hypotension during radical transabdominal ovarian cancer surgery: A case report.

Medicine (Baltimore)

Department of Anesthesiology, West China Second University Hospital, Sichuan University, Key Laboratory of Birth Defects and Related Diseases of Women and Children, Sichuan University, Ministry of Education, Chengdu, Sichuan, China.

Rationale: In radical surgery for ovarian cancer (OC), hypotension that is difficult to correct is usually rare unless there is significant blood loss. We recently encountered a patient who developed persistent and severe hypotension during radical transabdominal OC surgery.

Patient Concerns: A patient was 52 years old with a history of hypertension and well-controlled preoperative blood pressure (BP).

Hypoalbuminemia is a risk factor for mortality in patients with end-stage liver disease (ESLD) and in those undergoing orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT), since it represents a biomarker of post-operative delayed functional recovery of the graft. Despite albumin infusion during and after OLT is frequently adopted in recipients with hypoalbuminemia, it remains unclear whether this procedure could improve post OLT clinical outcomes. Observational studies indicated that treatment with albumin after OLT might be beneficial in reducing ascites and acute kidney injury (AKI) development.
