A detailed molecular network map and model of the NLRP3 inflammasome.

Front Immunol

December 2023

School of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health, Örebro University, Örebro, Sweden.

The NLRP3 inflammasome is a key regulator of inflammation that responds to a broad range of stimuli. The exact mechanism of activation has not been determined, but there is a consensus on cellular potassium efflux as a major common denominator. Once NLRP3 is activated, it forms high-order complexes together with NEK7 that trigger aggregation of ASC into specks.

The circadian clock time tunes axonal regeneration.

Cell Metab

December 2023

Division of Neuroscience, Department of Brain Sciences, Imperial College London, London W120NN, UK. Electronic address:

Nerve injuries cause permanent neurological disability due to limited axonal regeneration. Injury-dependent and -independent mechanisms have provided important insight into neuronal regeneration, however, common denominators underpinning regeneration remain elusive. A comparative analysis of transcriptomic datasets associated with neuronal regenerative ability revealed circadian rhythms as the most significantly enriched pathway.

Appearing and disappearing acts of cilia.

J Biosci

March 2023

School of Biological Sciences, UM-DAE Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences, Kalina Campus, Santacruz (E), Mumbai 400098, India.

The past few decades have seen a rise in research on vertebrate cilia and ciliopathy, with interesting collaborations between basic and clinical scientists. This work includes studies on ciliary architecture, composition, evolution, and organelle generation and its biological role. The human body has cells that harbour any of the following four types of cilia: 9+0 motile, 9+0 immotile, 9+2 motile, and 9+2 immotile.

Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) is a potentially life-threatening systemic small-vessel vasculitis that is characterized by pauci-immune glomerulonephritis in case of kidney involvement, representing a major denominator of AAV mortality. Innate immunity with complement system activation is increasingly recognized in the pathogenesis of AAV and as an attractive therapeutic target. Although C-reactive protein (CRP) was thought to be a passive, nonspecific marker of inflammation, recent studies indicate that CRP plays a key role in the innate immune system by recognizing pathogens and altered self-determinants.

Determining Breast Implant Prevalence: A Population Study of Italian Chest Radiographs.

Aesthetic Plast Surg

June 2023

Department NESMOS-Sant'Andrea Hospital, Faculty of Medicine and Psychology, Sapienza University of Rome, Via di Grottarossa 1035-1039, 00189, Rome, Italy.

Background: Current breast implant prevalence within the general population remains elusive. An accurate prevalence is critical to serve as the denominator for any assessment of breast implant-related complication. The purpose of this manuscript is to assess this prevalence in women aged 20-70 years in Italy.
