Stir bar sorptive extraction and trace analysis of selected endocrine disruptors in water, biosolids and sludge samples by thermal desorption with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) in combination with thermal desorption coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was successfully applied to analyze a range of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) in wastewater, solids and sludge. The targeted EDCs include sex steroid hormones, phthalates, alkylphenols and tamoxifen. Recovery for the EDCs using this analytical technique ranged from 44% to 128%. Limit of detection (LOD) of the compounds was 2.0 ng/L for water samples and 0.02 ng/g for solid samples, whereas the limit of quantitation (LOQ) was 5.0 ng/L for water samples and 0.06 ng/g for solid samples. When this analytical technique was applied to measure EDC concentration in a biological nutrient removal (BNR) wastewater treatment plant located in South East Queensland, Australia, the results showed that there were high amounts of phthalates, alkylphenols and female hormones present in the raw influent wastewater and solids. These concentrations were dramatically reduced after passing through the various treatment zones of the bioreactor (anaerobic, aerobic and anoxic).

A covalent organic framework (COF) based on imine was synthesized using 2,5-dihexoxyterephthalaldehyde (DHT) and 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl) benzene (TAPB) as starting materials. The TAPB-DHT-COF exhibited satisfactory chemical stability, making it a promising adsorbing material for stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) of four estrogens, including estrone (E1), β-estradiol (E2), hexestrol (HES), and mestranol (MeEE2), in ambient water samples. The extracted analytes were subsequently analyzed using a high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector (HPLC-DAD).

Article Synopsis
  • Huangshan Maofeng (HSMF) is a well-known baked green tea from Anhui, China, recognized for its fresh flavor, while Zhejiang specializes in green tea production.
  • The study used advanced techniques like stir bar sorptive extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to examine the aroma compounds and enantiomeric distribution in HSMF and Zhejiang baked green tea (ZJ-BGT).
  • Unique volatile compounds were found in both tea types, and certain compounds correlated with HSMF quality, highlighting specific enantiomers like S-jasmine lactone in HSMF that enhances flavor.

In this work, a miniaturized and sustainable method for the determination of endocrine-disrupting bisphenols in human serum and urine employing the miniaturized stir bar sorptive dispersive microextraction (mSBSDME) approach has been developed. As bisphenols are conjugated in the human body to their glucorinated and sulfated forms, an enzymolysis employing a commercial mixture of β-glucuronidase and arylsulfatase was carried out prior to the microextraction procedure to determine their total content. A magnetic covalent organic framework (COF) was employed as the sorbent to carry out the extraction of the analytes from the biological matrixes, showing good extraction performance due to its hydrophobic, π-π, and dipole-dipole interactions with the analytes.

Insight into volatile metabolites and key odorants in black teas processed from Jianghua Kucha tea germplasm (Camellia sinensis var. assamica cv. Jianghua).

Food Chem

Key Laboratory of Biology, Genetics and Breeding of Special Economic Animals and Plants, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Tea Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Hangzhou 310008, PR China. Electronic address:

Jianghua Kucha (JHKC) is an ancient tea germplasm, which presents a high value for resource utilization but was less developed in aroma research. In this study, volatile metabolites in fresh leaves and corresponding black teas of JHKC, along with odorants of JHKC black teas were systematically investigated using stir-bar sorptive extraction in combination with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and GC-olfactometry/MS (GC-O/MS) technologies. A total of 128 and 135 volatile compounds were identified in fresh leaves and black teas, respectively, along with 13 key differential volatile components derived from fatty acids, pigments, glycoside precursors, and the terpene pathway.

The coupling of Solid-Phase Microextraction (SPME) technology with gas chromatography (GC) has a well-established and successful history. Traditionally, SPME fibers have been the most popular form thanks to their versatility and the ease with which they can be fully automated. However, alternative geometries for SPME have been developed over the years, beginning with Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction (SBSE) and later evolving into Thin-Film SPME (TF-SPME) devices.
