Pre- and postdesiccation sound speeds through ex vivo porcine skull specimens were determined by time-of-flight measurements with propagated broadband pulses centered at 0.97 MHz (Os 12.7 mm, -6-dB band-width = 58%). The measured longitudinal sound speed in the 13 porcine samples (predesiccation average sound speed = 1727 +/- 57 ms(-1)) changed by a statistically significant +2.3% after deionized water reconstitution (paired t-test, alpha = 0.05, p = 0.0332).

Loud noise exposure is one of the leading causes of permanent hearing loss. Individuals with noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) suffer from speech comprehension deficits and experience impairments to cognitive functions such as attention and decision-making. Here, we investigate the specific underlying cognitive processes during auditory perceptual decision-making that are impacted by NIHL.

Sound speed data measured using a dual-path pulse-echo instrument are reported for pure -1,2-dichloroethene (R-1130(E)) and an azeotropic blend of -1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluorobutene (R-1336mzz(Z)) and R-1130(E) with a composition of 74.8 mass % R-1336mzz(Z) with the balance being R-1130(E). The azeotropic blend of R-1336mzz(Z)/1130(E) is classified as R-514A in ANSI/ASHRAE standard 34.

Numerous studies have reported benefits of music listening to support learning and motor rehabilitation. In the case of handwriting, previous studies suggested that musical background improves movement speed and fluency. Whether this benefit comes from the melody or is specifically related to the rhythmic cues provided by the music remains to be established.
