Previous studies have indicated that the devil stinger produces reactive oxygen species (ROS) during early development from fertilized egg to larva. To determine whether ROS generation is a common feature in marine fish species, we conducted chemiluminescence analysis using ROS specific probe (L012) on larvae of six marine fish species. Marbled rockfish, black rockfish, and devil stinger showed higher levels of chemiluminescence response (CR), whereas the levels of CR of sevenband grouper, tiger puffer, and red seabream were fairly lower. These CRs were inhibited by the addition of superoxide dismutase. Hypersensitive photon-counting microscopic observation of black rockfish suggested that ROS production was concentrated in the head area. Our results suggest that the larvae of these six marine fishes produce ROS to considerably different extents depending on species, and that rockfish species, belonging to ovoviviparous fish, tend to produce much higher levels of ROS especially at the later larval stage.

Based on the observation that urea, water, and ethyl esters (EE) can form gypsum-like mixtures, this study explored the feasibility of employing water as a solvent for urea in the urea complexation method to enrich n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-containing ethyl esters (DHA- EE) from Crypthecodinium cohnii as the material. Under the conditions of a urea/DHA-EE ratio of 3, a water/DHA-EE ratio of 0.75, a mixing temperature of 65℃, and a cooling temperature of 20℃, a concentrate containing over 90% DHA was achieved.

Invasive silver carp () threaten Mississippi River basin ecosystems due to their ability to outcompete native species. Stable carbon (δC) and nitrogen (δN) isotope analysis has been used to study how silver carp impact native ecosystems, but lipids in fish tissues commonly bias their δC values. Chemical lipid extraction and mathematical equations that normalise δC values for lipid content can account for this bias, but have not been assessed for silver carp.

Coral reef ecosystem is a crucial component of marine ecosystems and is undergoing severe degradation due to the combined dural impact of environmental changes and human activities. Soundscape technology is an innovative coral reef restoration approach that attracts fish to degraded reefs. Inspired by such technique, a five-dimensional mathematical dynamical model incorporating the asymmetric dispersal of parrotfish is formulated to characterize the dynamic interaction among macroalgae, coral, algal turf, and parrotfish in coral reef ecosystem.

Granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) has been shown in mammalia to activate a series of signal transduction systems and exert various biological effects, such as controlling the differentiation, proliferation, and survival of granulocytes, promoting the movement of hematopoietic stem cells from the bone marrow to the bloodstream, and triggering the development of T cells, dendritic cells, and immune tolerance in transplants. In this study, the mRNA of flounder G-CSF (PoG-CSF) and its receptor (PoGCSFR) were detected and widely expressed in all examined tissues with the highest expression in peritoneal cells. G-CSF and GCSFR cells were observed to be abundantly distributed in the leukocytes from the peritoneal cavity, followed by head kidney.

Micro(nano)plastics (MNPs), widely distributed in the environment, can be ingested and accumulated by various organisms. Recently, the transgenerational transport of MNPs from parental organisms to their offspring has attracted increasing attention. In this review, we summarize the patterns, specific pathways, and related mechanisms of intergenerational transfer of MNPs in plants, non-mammals (zooplankton and fish) and mammals.
