Aim: Recent findings show that the vaginal mucosa can develop an allergic response to environmental allergens and there is a strong association between atopy and some recurrent vulvovaginal infections. In this study, we investigated prospectively the rate of atopy in patients with recurrent vulvovaginitis of undetermined etiology (RVV).
Material And Methods: After being investigated by a gynecologist, 35 patients with RVV who were considered as undetermined etiology formed the study group. The control group consisted of 150 healthy females. Study and control groups were investigated for atopy by means of skin prick test for common aeroallergens. Associated allergic disease and familial atopy history of the subjects were recorded.
Results: The rate of atopy (11/35; 31.4% vs 9/150; 6%) was significantly higher (P < 0.001) in the study group than in the controls. Familial history of atopy was significantly more frequent in the study group than in the controls (10/35; 28.6% vs 8/150; 5.3%, P < 0.05). RVV in atopics is more associated with seasonal rhinitis than in nonatopics (5/11; 45.4% vs 2/24; 8.3%, P < 0.05).
Conclusion: We concluded that a significant number of RVV is associated with atopy. Although the exact mechanism(s) of this relationship remains to be investigated atopy might be a causative and/or contributing factor in the pathogenesis of RVV.

Eosinophilic myocarditis (EM), irrespective of its unique etiology, is marked by varying extents of eosinophil infiltration, frequently accompanied by peripheral eosinophilia. In some instances, the etiology remains undetermined, thus classified as idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome. The clinical manifestations are highly variable, ranging from mild or asymptomatic presentations to acute fulminant myocarditis or chronic restrictive cardiomyopathy.

Understanding the naïve B cell repertoire and its specificity for potential zoonotic threats, such as the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5Nx viruses, may allow prediction of infection- or vaccine-specific responses. However, this naïve repertoire and the possibility to respond to emerging, prepandemic viruses are largely undetermined. Here, we profiled naïve B cell reactivity against a prototypical HPAI H5 hemagglutinin (HA), the major target of antibody responses.

Purpose: Fish are susceptible to various parasitic infections, with Myxozoa emerging as a major group. A taxonomic study of Myxozoa is essential for the rapid diagnosis of species potentially responsible for epizootic diseases.
Methods: The studied fish was collected from the Kadey River, a tributary of the Sangha River in the Congo Basin in Cameroon, and parasitologically dissected.

Background: PD-L1 expression in tumors and immune cells is a biomarker for the efficacy of anti-PD-1 antibody (APA) therapy across diverse cancers. Based on the results from the KEYNOTE-048 trial, pembrolizumab monotherapy is indicated for platinum-sensitive recurrent/metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (R/M-HNSCC) with a positive combined positive score (CPS). Conversely, nivolumab is utilized for platinum-pretreated R/M-HNSCC regardless of the positive tumor proportion score (TPS) following the results of the CheckMate-141; however, its subgroup analysis indicated that TPS-positive population tended to have a relatively high overall response rate and progression-free survival (PFS).

We theorize that the southeastern United States has a higher stroke mortality rate and higher recurrent ischemic stroke rate than the rest of the United States due to (1) an increased prevalence of hypercoagulable states among young adults in the region, (2) failure to diagnose hypercoagulable states as the cause of ischemic stroke in young adults, and (3) underutilization of anticoagulation for ischemic stroke secondary prevention in young adults with hypercoagulable states. In an attempt to investigate this hypothesis, we conducted a retrospective chart review of 311 inpatients with first-ever ischemic stroke from age 18 to 55 years at an Oklahoma academic medical center from 1 July 2011 to 30 April 2017. Using Chi-squared test, we compared the stroke etiologic diagnosis of the attending neurologist at discharge-when hypercoagulable profile results were rarely available-to the diagnosis of a vascular neurologist postdischarge who had access to all available etiologic test results.
