Background: Parkland formula (PF) is the most often used schema for calculating intravenous resuscitation fluid requirement in burn patients. Some studies have reported that PF underestimates the fluid requirement in 45-63% of patients. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyse factors influencing first-day intravenous fluid replacement set for a targeted urinary output in severely burnt patients.

Methods: Data of 47 patients with burn injury affecting equal or more than 15% of body surface area were retrieved from the archived files. The local intensive care protocol rendered the infusion rate of lactated Ringer's solution to achieve a urinary output of 0.5-1.0 mL/kg per hour in the first 24 h after burn trauma.

Results: First-day i.v. infusion volume was significantly higher than PF preferred. In the first 24 h the hourly volume of intravenous fluid resuscitation per bodyweight per burnt surface area showed significant negative correlation to the burnt body surface area and body mass index, (r = -0.553, P < 0.001; r = -0.570, P < 0.001, respectively) no correlation was found to bodyweight, height or patient age. Patients having deep-burn injury required higher intravenous fluid resuscitation rate than patients having superficial injury only (P < 0.01).

Conclusion: Our data suggest that fluid requirement is higher than predicted by PF if the extent of burn or body mass index is low and less if the extent of burn or body mass index is high. The presence of deep burn increases fluid requirement.

Objective: This review aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of premedication comprising mucolytics and/or defoaming agents to improve the quality of visualization during elective upper digestive endoscopy (elective upper GI endoscopy) procedure.

Materials And Methods: A systematic review of the literature contained in electronic databases (Medline/Pubmed, Embase, and Lilacs) was performed to identify randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews that assessed patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (elective upper GI Endoscopy) under sedation, after being premedicated with mucolytics and/or defoaming agents for mucous clearance. A meta-analysis was conducted to determine the relative efficacy and safety profile of such premedication.

Quantifying tear exchange during rigid contact lens wear using corneoscleral profilometry: A proof of concept study.

Introduction: Tear exchange during contact lens wear is essential for ocular surface integrity, facilitating debris removal, and maintaining corneal metabolism. Fluorophotometry and fluorogram methods are typically used to measure tear exchange, which require hardware modifications to a slit lamp biomicroscope. This manuscript introduces an alternative method using a corneoscleral profilometer, the Eye Surface Profiler (ESP), to quantify tear exchange during corneal and scleral rigid lens wear by assessing fluorescence intensity changes over time.

Heterogeneous fault architecture affects crustal seismotectonics and fluid migration. When studying it, we commonly rely on static conceptual models that generally overlook the absolute time dimension of fault (re)activation. Heterogenous faults, however, represent the end-result of protracted, cumulative and intricate deformation histories.

Background: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) after orthognathic surgery remains one of the most common side effects despite the use of several medications.

Purpose: The study aimed to compare the frequencies of PONV between a combination of metoclopramide with granisetron and granisetron alone.

Study Design, Setting, Sample: A randomized double-blind clinical trial was conducted in 66 consecutive patients who underwent orthognathic surgery at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Bezmialem Vakif University.

Electrical stimulation displayed tremendous potential in promoting nerve regeneration. However, the current electrical stimulation therapy required complex traversing wires and external power sources, which significantly limited its practical application. Herein, a self-powered nerve scaffold based on primary battery principle was gradient printed by laser additive manufacturing technique.
