Background: Perimembranous ventricular septal defect (VSD) can be classified as having trabecular, inlet, or outlet extension. The surgical approach used in patch closure depends on the which valve of the tricuspid valve to suture around and the avoidance of the specialized conducting system. This retrospective study evaluated the usefulness of the "En face view" method for classifying perimembranous VSD.

Objective: To study the prevalence of synchronous oesophageal cancer in patients with head and neck cancers using Narrow Band Imaging and Lugol's chromoendoscopy.

Materials And Methods: Study design: Prospective cross sectional diagnostic study. Method: 63 recruited patients with head and neck cancers, underwent haematologic evaluation, histological confirmation, imaging which included contrast enhanced computerised tomography(CECT) of the Neck and when indicated an additional Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI) scan followed by UGI endoscopy using white light followed by Narrow Band Imaging(NBI) and Lugol's chromoendoscopy(LCE).

Ventricular septation for double inlet ventricle: Avoiding conduction injury.

J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg

September 2024

Department of Cardiac Surgery, Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Mass. Electronic address:

Objectives: Although conduction location can be reliably predicted in double inlet ventricle, ventricular septation continues to carry a significant risk of complete heart block. This study describes our experience using intraoperative conduction mapping during ventricular septation.

Methods: Patients undergoing ventricular septation from 2017 to 2023 were identified.

Low incidence of microplastics in coral reefs of Kāne'ohe Bay, Hawai'i, USA.

Mar Pollut Bull

November 2024

School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, University of Washington, 1122 NE Boat St., Seattle, Washington 98105, USA.

This study investigated microplastic and other micro-debris pollution in sediment, seawater, sea cucumbers, and corals from fringing and patch reefs in Kāne'ohe Bay, O'ahu, Hawai'i, USA. Microplastic pollution in Kāne'ohe Bay Bay was low compared to other tropical coral reefs. Microplastics were detected in sediments (29 %), sea cucumbers (9 %), and coral (0-2 %) samples but were not quantifiable.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compares two endoscopic techniques, endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and endoscopic laryngo-pharyngeal surgery (ELPS), for treating superficial pharyngeal carcinomas to assess their effectiveness.
  • A review of 93 patients showed that ELPS had significantly shorter procedure times and led to less laryngeal edema compared to ESD, although long-term survival outcomes were similar for both methods.
  • The findings suggest that while ELPS is quicker and less damaging, it has limitations in treating narrow areas; therefore, combining ELPS with ESD may enhance treatment efficacy.
