The distance of closest approach of hard particles is a key parameter of their interaction and plays an important role in the resulting phase behavior. For nonspherical particles, the distance of closest approach depends on orientation, and its calculation is surprisingly difficult. Although overlap criteria have been developed for use in computer simulations [Vieillard-Baron, J. Chem. Phys. 56, 4729 (1972); Perram and Wertheim, J. Comput. Phys. 58, 409 (1985)], no analytic solutions have been obtained for the distance of closest approach of ellipsoids in three dimensions, or, until now, for ellipses in two dimensions. We have derived an analytic expression for the distance of closest approach of the centers of two arbitrary hard ellipses as a function of their orientation relative to the line joining their centers. We describe our method for solving this problem, illustrate our result, and discuss its usefulness in modeling and simulating systems of anisometric particles such as liquid crystals.

Impartial altruism is often considered a moral ideal but is rare in practice. Instead, generosity typically decreases as social distance increases, a phenomenon termed social discounting. Most people prefer this partiality in their close relationships and view impartial altruists as poorer relationship partners.

Based on the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers developed by whole genome resequencing (WGRS), the relationship and population genetic structure of 53 common apricot () varieties were analyzed to provide a theoretical basis for revealing the phylogenetic relationship and classification of the common apricot. WGRS was performed on 53 common apricot varieties, and high-quality SNP sites were obtained after alignment with the "" apricot genome as a reference. Phylogenetic analysis, G matrix analysis, principal component analysis, and population structure analysis were performed using Genome-wide Complex Trait Analysis (GCTA), FastTree, Admixture, and other software.

Genome rearrangements are events where large blocks of DNA exchange places during evolution. The analysis of these events is a promising tool for understanding evolutionary genomics, providing data for phylogenetic reconstruction based on genome rearrangement measures. Many pairwise rearrangement distances have been proposed, based on finding the minimum number of rearrangement events to transform one genome into the other, using some predefined operation.

Seroprevalence of Brucellosis in Livestock and Farmers' Choice of Milk Marketing Channels in Rwamagana District, Rwanda.

Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida.

Brucellosis remains an endemic disease in livestock populations in Rwanda, but the prevalence of the disease varies by geographic region. The common use of informal milk marketing channels represents a health hazard to humans when milk from Brucella-infected cows from one or more households is mixed with milk from other households for human consumption. In Rwanda, knowledge about the burden of brucellosis in livestock and factors associated with farmers' choice of milk marketing channels is very limited.

Designing dental crowns with computer-aided design software in dental laboratories is complex and time-consuming. Using real clinical datasets, we developed an end-to-end deep learning model that automatically generates personalized dental crown meshes. The input context includes the prepared tooth, its adjacent teeth, and the two closest teeth in the opposing jaw.
