Published: February 2008

Objective: Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix. In contrast to Asian women, Caucasian women have a low prevalence of cervical LELC with no infection of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and sporadic appearances of human papilloma viruses (HPV) in Caucasian women.

Case: We report a 36-year-old female Caucasian patient with LELC of the cervix.

Result: In contrast to the present studies, our case of LELC of the cervix is not associated with EBV or high-risk HPV appearances.

Conclusion: This is the first study, that showed no relationship between LELC of the uterine cervix with EBV and high-risk HPV infections in a Caucasian woman.

Background: Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer worldwide in females. This occurs primarily due to the infection of high-risk Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), although in advanced stages it requires support from host cellular factors. BRN3A is one such host cellular factors, whose expression remains high in cervical cancers and upregulates tumorigenic HPV gene expression.

In cervical cancer screening, cytology is used as a triage test to refer high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV)-positive women for colposcopy, but its accuracy is inadequate. The present study aimed to demonstrate that the presence of atypical cells with large vacuoles in the cytoplasm of parabasal cells, referred to as vacuolated parabasal cells (VPCs), which are observed in the Pap smears of HPV-positive women, is associated with specific HPV genotypes. Among 2175 patients, 310 with a single HR-HPV infection and cytological diagnosis of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) or atypical squamous cells not excluding HSIL (ASC-H) were included, of which 86 were infected with HPV16.

Photothermal therapy, in which a laser is an effective tool, is a promising method for cancer treatment. Laser parameters, including power, irradiation time, type of laser radiation (continuous or chopped), and the concentration of the photothermal agent, can affect the efficiency of this method. Therefore, this study investigated and compared the effects of different laser parameters on the efficiency of photothermal treatment for cervical cancer, which is the fourth most prevalent cancer in women.

Testosterone-induced Seminal Vesicle-like Differentiation in Cervical Mesonephric Duct Remnants in a Female to Male Transgender Patient.

Int J Gynecol Pathol

January 2025

Department of Pathology, Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK.

Pure ductal-type mesonephric remnants in the uterine cervix are rare. We report an unusual case in a 31-yr-old of cervical mesonephric remnants of predominantly ductal type exhibiting seminal vesicle-like differentiation in a female-to-male transgender patient receiving long-term testosterone therapy. To the best of our knowledge, this phenomenon has not been previously reported.
