Background: Chordoma is a slow-growing, primary malignant bone tumor that arises from notochordal tissue in the midline of the axial skeleton. Surgical excision with negative margins is the mainstay of treatment, but high local recurrence rates are reported even with negative margins. High-dose radiation therapy (RT), such as with proton or carbon ions, has been used as an alternative to surgery, but late local failure remains a problem.

Dose-dependent impact of intact cell fraction on in vitro starch digestion of common bean-based flour blends.

Food Chem

January 2025

Laboratory of Food Technology, Department of Microbial and Molecular Systems (M2S), KU Leuven, Kasteelpark Arenberg 22, PB 2457, 3001 Leuven, Belgium. Electronic address:

Pulse flours consisting of isolated cotyledon cells (ICC) have been incorporated in foods with delayed amylolysis. To optimize the cost-benefit ratio, understanding how the dosage of cellular ingredient affects starch digestibility is essential. Therefore, dose-response relationships were established to evaluate the sensitivity of amylolysis kinetics to the inclusion of intact cells in whole common bean-based flours.

Objectives: To understand place-based drivers of racial disparities in stroke mortality in the United States by investigating the relationship between county-level measures of structural racism and racial disparities in stroke mortality.

Methods: We constructed an additive structural racism score from census-based indicators of racial disproportionality (income, poverty, unemployment, home ownership, education, health insurance) and residential segregation (evenness, isolation), as well as county-level jail incarceration data from the Vera Institute of Justice. We utilized age-standardized, spatially smoothed stroke death rates in 2021 for Black and White adults aged 35-64 years in the United States.

Background: Three dimensional (3D) cell cultures can be effectively used for drug discovery and development but there are still challenges in their general application to high-throughput screening. In this study, we developed a novel high-throughput chemotherapeutic 3D drug screening system for gastric cancer, named 'Cure-GA', to discover clinically applicable anticancer drugs and predict therapeutic responses.

Methods: Primary cancer cells were isolated from 143 fresh surgical specimens by enzymatic treatment.

Spondylodiscitis can be caused by various microorganisms and has shown a continuous rise in incidence and mortality. The purpose of our study was to analyze the demographic and laboratory data, as well as comorbidities of patients that were surgically treated for spondylodiscitis in our hospital. The causative pathogens involved in the etiology of spinal infections were also assessed.
