The rapid development of radar detection systems has led to an increased sensitivity to the electromagnetic (EM) scattering properties of detected targets. Flexible and adaptable EM scattering properties significantly enhance the survivability of battlefield weapons. This paper presents the design of a novel multifunctional metamaterial with reconfigurable EM scattering properties based on a bistable curved beam.

A full aperture backscatter system (FABS) is currently in development on the Orion laser at AWE to measure scattered light from the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) processes. The light is to be collected through the full aperture of the final optic assembly and traverse back down the beam path, with fractions of this light being directed to an optics table. By measuring the energy of this backscattered light, it is possible to gain insight into some of the laser-plasma instabilities that are present on the laser system and should give an indication of some of the scattered light losses due to the SBS and SRS processes.

Antlers are bony structures composed predominantly of primary osteons with unique mechanical properties due to their specific use by deer as weapon and shield. Antler bone fracture resistance has attracted prior scrutiny through experimental tests and theoretical models. To characterize antler mechanical properties, compression of cubes, or bending or tensioning of rectangular bars have been performed in the literature with variations in the protocols precluding comparisons of the data.

This paper introduces a novel, to the best of our knowledge, design of a voice coil TTM using an octagonal flexible mechanism and optimizes its parameters through theoretical analysis and finite element simulations. The results show that its resonance frequency in the non-working direction is up to 1005.
