AI Article Synopsis

  • The study aimed to evaluate the impact of injecting triamcinolone acetonide (TA) after a specific eye surgery (PPV) for diabetic macular edema (DME).
  • In a controlled trial, one group received PPV with TA while another group had PPV alone, with both groups monitored for changes in visual acuity and foveal thickness over a year.
  • Results showed initial improvements in vision and foveal thickness in the TA group, but these benefits declined over time, leading to worse outcomes compared to the control group at 12 months.

Article Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of intravitreous triamcinolone acetonide (TA) after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for diabetic macular edema (DME).

Methods: We studied a prospective interventional case series. TA was injected intravitreously after PPV in 28 eyes (PPV+TA group). Eyes with DME that met the same criteria and had been treated with PPV alone (29 eyes) were used as controls. The best-corrected visual acuity (VA) and foveal thickness determined by optical coherence tomography were followed up for over 12 months in both groups. Chronological changes of VA and foveal thickness between the groups were evaluated.

Results: In the PPV+TA group, VA had improved at 1 month, but worsened after 3 months. Improvement of foveal thickness was found until 3 months, but not after 6 months. In controls, both VA and foveal thickness continued to improve. The VA of the PPV+TA group was significantly better than that of the controls at 1 and 3 months (P = 0.007 and 0.015, respectively). The foveal thickness of the PPV+TA group was significantly less than that of controls at 1 month (P = 0.0004). These differences became insignificant thereafter, and foveal thickness became significantly worse in the PPV+TA group than in the controls at 12 months (P = 0.0002).

Conclusion: Although adjunctive use of TA after PPV for DME improved VA and foveal thickness, the effect was transient and foveal thickness increased significantly compared with the PPV alone group at 12 months postoperatively.

Background: To investigate functional and anatomical outcomes after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for lamellar macular hole (LMH) with a long-term follow-up.

Methods: An interventional study on 14 patients (16 eyes) with LMH was conducted. The inclusion criteria included a minimum 36-month follow-up after PPV.

Background: To analyse the effect of suprachoroidal injection (SChI) of triamcinolone acetonide (TA) on macular thickness (CRT), ectopic inner foveal layer thickness (EIFL-T) and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in pseudophakic patients undergoing vitrectomy for epiretinal membrane (iERM) compared to intravitreal injection of TA (IVTA).

Methods: Prospective matched comparison of patients undergoing vitrectomy for Govetto stage 3 and 4 iERM. 25 eyes receiving IVTA (G-1) were compared to 23 eyes receiving SChI-TA (G-2) during vitrectomy.

Purpose: Utilizing Swept source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA) investigates the changes in the vascular characteristics of the choriocapillaris and larger vascular layers, including Sattler's and Haller's layers, in the macular region of young myopia patients, in order to to Enhance our comprehension of the underlying mechanisms of the pathogenesis of myopia.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on 103 young adults (154 eyes) that underwent SS-OCTA. Axial lengths (AL) were measured, 64 eyes with AL < 26.

Purpose: We investigated changes in macular topography and their association with visual acuity and metamorphopsia in the idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM).

Methods: Twenty-four eyes that underwent vitrectomy and ERM removal with internal limiting membrane peeling were included in this study. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and horizontal/vertical metamorphopsia scores (h and vM-scores in the M-chart) were assessed.
