Published: October 2007

Freeze-dried and frozen particulate bone allografts are used interchangeably on the assumption that the biologic behavior of these grafts is similar. Dissimilarities in biologic behavior and differences in the rate and extent of bone incorporation of freeze-dried and frozen particulate grafts were demonstrated in a comparative study using a non-human primate model. Freeze-dried particulate allografts induced new bone formation and healing of the osseous defects much faster than the frozen allografts.

Numerous commercially available biopharmaceuticals are frozen or freeze-dried in vials. The temperature at which ice nucleates and its distribution across vials in a batch is critical to the design of freezing and freeze-drying processes. Here we study experimentally how the level of particulate impurities - a key parameter in pharmaceutical manufacturing - affects the ice nucleation behavior.

Mastoid obliteration can be performed after canal wall down (CWD) mastoidectomy with various materials. Homologous bone tissue harvested from cadaver donor represents a feasible option with advantages. The purpose of the study is to describe the case of a patient diagnosed with middle ear cholesteatoma treated with mastoidectomy of the CWD and mastoid obliteration with homologous freeze-dried corticocancellous bone particulate in the Cittadella Hospital Ear, Nose, Throat (ENT) unit.

Article Synopsis
  • The study addresses cardiac arrhythmias, a condition requiring long-term management with medications like diltiazem hydrochloride, which faces limitations in traditional administration methods due to absorption challenges.
  • Researchers developed a transdermal patch using solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) to enhance the drug's skin permeability and bioavailability, employing a solvent diffusion technique for SLN preparation.
  • Results showed that the formulated patch had a good drug release profile (70.7% over 24 hours), a high drug content of 89.37%, and an optimal surface pH close to that of human skin, making it a promising delivery method for diltiazem.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of Autologous Particulate Dentin (APD) and Demineralized Freeze-Dried Bone Allograft (DFDBA) in preserving jawbone ridges after tooth extraction, analyzing both clinical and radiographic outcomes.
  • Thirty participants had their mandibular posterior teeth extracted and were divided into two groups to receive either APD or DFDBA mixed with i-PRF, with assessments conducted before and six months after the procedure.
  • Results showed that while both groups experienced a decrease in ridge dimensions, the APD group had less reduction in horizontal ridge width compared to the DFDBA group, indicating APD may be a more effective option for ridge preservation.

Background: Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) is a versatile technique employed not only to correct pre-implant alveolar bone defects but also to facilitate bone defect correction during simultaneous implant placement. The effectiveness of GBR varies significantly among different protocols, as reported in the literature. This study specifically aimed to radiologically evaluate the horizontal bone gain obtained using a GBR procedure combining a particulate allograft, platelet-rich fibrin, resorbable collagen membrane, and screw tents.
