Melanocortin 5 receptor signaling protects against podocyte injury in proteinuric glomerulopathies.

Kidney Int

Melanocortin therapeutics, exemplified by adrenocorticotropic hormone, have a proven steroidogenic-independent anti-proteinuric and glomerular protective effect. The biological functions of melanocortins are mediated by melanocortin receptors (MCR), including MC1R, which recent studies have shown to protect against glomerular disease. However, the role of other MCRs like MC5R is unknown.

Hypertriglyceridemia has serious health risks such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, nephropathy, and others. Fenofibrate is an effective hypolipidemic drug, but its benefits for ameliorating disorders associated with hypertriglyceridemia failed to be proven in clinical trials. To search for possible causes of this situation and possibilities of their favorable influence, we tested the effect of FF monotherapy and the combination of fenofibrate with silymarin on metabolic disorders in a unique model of hereditary hypertriglyceridemic rats (HHTg).

Obesity has emerged as a global epidemic with far-reaching health complications, including its role as an independent risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD). Increasing evidence suggests that obesity contributes to CKD through multiple mechanisms, including chronic inflammation, hemodynamic alterations, insulin resistance, and lipid accumulation. These processes can culminate in histopathological changes collectively referred to as obesity-related glomerulopathy (ORG).

Identifying potential mechanism and targets for treatment of tertiary lymphoid structure in lupus nephritis based on bioinformatics analysis.

Int Immunopharmacol

January 2025

Department of Nephrology, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430030, Hubei, China. Electronic address:

Background: Tertiary lymphoid structure (TLS) is an ectopic lymphoid structure that develops in non-lymphoid structures. Some studies have shown that the TLS formed in autoimmune diseases, such as lupus nephropathy (LN), can cause damage to normal tissues and continuous disease progression. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of efficient treatments for TLS in LN.

The development of mesothelin (MSLN) epitope reactive T cells is observed in mice that are immunized with the MSLN vaccine. Engineered T cells expressing MSLN-reactive high-affinity TCR exhibit extraordinary therapeutic effects for invasive pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma in a mouse model. However, the generation of MSLN-reactive T cells through the introduction of MSLN-deficient thymus and the transplantation of the latter as a cure for cancer treatment have not been tested to date.
