Published: July 2007

Objectives: To conduct a systematic review of repairs of Olympus flexible ureteroscopes using an independent database to compare and contrast with the published data obtained from ureteroscope manufacturers.

Methods: The repair data from 2000 to 2004 were extracted from a computer database obtained through Precision Endoscopy of America, an independent endoscope repair company. All endoscopes submitted for repair underwent a detailed 16 to 32-point inspection using a set protocol for each endoscope make and model, as determined by the manufacturer.

Results: A total of 341 repairs were performed on the Olympus URF-P (4%), URF-P2 (47%), and URF-P3 (47%) flexible ureteroscopes. The distal segment was the most common repair site requiring repair (30%), with 87% of these repairs requiring replacement of the bending rubber. The repairs also included the deflection apparatus (14%) and hand control segment (9%) and image-related repairs (9%). The between-group assessment showed a statistically significant decrease in deflection apparatus repairs for the URF-P2 (20%) compared with the URF-P3 (7%; P <0.001, chi-square = 11.96).

Conclusions: The results of our study have shown that the loss of deflection is less common with the newer Olympus ureteroscopes. The distal deflection tip, specifically the outer bending rubber, is the most common site of damage to Olympus flexible ureteroscopes. Improvements in form and function of the distal tip should decrease the maintenance expenses and increase ureteroscope longevity.

Background: Endoscopic treatments of symptomatic Zenker's diverticulum (ZD) include flexible endoscopic septotomy (FES) and, more recently, peroral endoscopic myotomy (Z-POEM). Data comparing these techniques are limited. We conducted a meta-analysis evaluating FES vs.

Purpose: Use of suction in flexible ureteroscopy is increasing lately. The introduction of flexible and navigable suction access sheath (FANS) has shown improved stone free rate (SFR). However, its efficacy in lower pole stone (LPS) in terms of SFR and complications is yet to be studied.

Colonoscopy Remains an Important Option for Primary Screening for Colorectal Cancer.

Dig Dis Sci

December 2024

Division of Gastroenterology/Hepatology, Department of Medicine, Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, IN, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • - Colonoscopy is the most commonly used screening test for colorectal cancer in the U.S., with high sensitivity for detecting precancerous lesions, allowing screenings every 10 years, and possibly every 15 years for those with normal results.
  • - There is substantial evidence showing colonoscopy reduces colorectal cancer incidence and mortality, supported by various studies, including comparisons with other screening methods like flexible sigmoidoscopy.
  • - Advances in colonoscopy techniques, such as improved mucosal exposure methods and non-device strategies, have enhanced detection rates of precancerous lesions, along with safer resection techniques for small lesions, increasing the effectiveness of this screening option.

Objective: Zenker diverticulum is a mucosal herniation at the pharyngoesophageal junction. Although open surgical myotomy is the conventional treatment, robust evidence on third-space flexible endoscopic myotomy is lacking. We assessed safety, effectiveness, and patient-reported outcomes of per-oral endoscopic myotomy (Z-POEM) in the largest reported single-center experience with this technique.

The role of combining interim and final analysis by using endoscopic and radiologic methods in total neoadjuvant treatment.

Department of Colorectal Surgery, Digestive Disease and Surgery Institute, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares the effectiveness of flexible sigmoidoscopy (FS), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and their combinations for assessing complete response (CR) in rectal cancer after total neoadjuvant treatment (TNT).
  • During the evaluation of 208 patients, FS alone showed the highest sensitivity for detecting CR and achieved moderate concordance with the results.
  • The findings suggest that while final FS and MRI offer the best concordance for CR, interim MRI may not provide significant additional benefit and could be excluded from assessments.
