Objective: To study the relationship between ankle-brachial index (ABI) and all cause mortality and cardiovascular disease mortality in men with several atherosclerotic risk factors.

Methods: 1941 male patients with no less than two atherosclerotic risk factors, aged 67 (36 approximately 96), from 20 hospitals in Shanghai and Beijing, underwent examination of ABI and were followed up for 13.6 +/- 1.3 months to record the all cause mortality and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality.

Results: The baseline examination showed that 467 patients were with the ABI 0.9 (7.7% and 1.8%, both P < 0.01). After adjusting other risk factors, the patients with 0.41 < ABI
Conclusion: Low ABI is an independent risk factor to all cause mortality and CVD mortality, especially to CVD mortality.

Background: Early neurological deterioration (END) is associated with a poor prognosis in acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Effectively lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) can improve the stability of atherosclerotic plaque and reduce post-stroke inflammation, which may be an effective means to lower the incidence of END. The objective of this study was to determine the preventive effects of evolocumab on END in patients with non-cardiogenic AIS.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk calculators estimate the 10-year incident risk of myocardial infarction (MI), coronary artery disease (CAD) death, or stroke; however, they lack comprehensiveness and accuracy. Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) is a surrogate marker that may improve risk estimation acumen. The objective of this study was to derive ASCVD risk scores from historical data and determine whether these risk scores are associated with the history of subclinical CAD and CIMT.

Background: Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) improve prognosis in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Nilotinib and ponatinib, second- and third-generation TKIs, respectively, have been reported to cause adverse vascular occlusive events such as myocardial infarction and peripheral arterial disease. However, little is known about the risk of cerebral infarction associated with severe cerebrovascular stenosis, which is a late complication of TKIs.

The effect of long-chain n-3 PUFA on liver transcriptome in human obesity.

Department of Medicine III, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Medical University of Vienna, Austria; Department of Medicine III and Karl Landsteiner Institute for Metabolic Diseases and Nephrology, Clinic Hietzing, Vienna, Austria. Electronic address:

Background And Aims: Obesity is associated with a higher risk of severe diseases such as atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Polyunsaturated fatty acids, of the omega-3 family (n-3 PUFA), have been shown to reduce adipose tissue inflammation in obesity, as well as to have lipid-lowering effects and improve insulin sensitivity. However, direct effects on liver transcriptome in humans have not been described.

Cardiovascular effects of tirzepatide.

J Endocrinol

January 2025

S Zoungas, School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University Faculty of Medicine Nursing and Health Sciences, Melbourne, Australia.

Tirzepatide is a first-in-class dual agonist at receptors for glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) for the treatment of T2D and obesity with unprecedented efficacy for glycaemic control and reductions in body weight as well as improvements in blood pressure and lipid profile compared with placebo and GLP-1 receptor agonists. To date, clinical trials of tirzepatide have fulfilled the requirement by regulatory authorities of demonstrated cardiovascular safety in high-risk patients. Whether cardiovascular benefits will be found with dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonists remains uncertain, and the contribution of GIP receptor activation to cardiovascular risk has not been established.
