Tests on Methyridine as an Anthelmintic in Sheep.

Can J Comp Med Vet Sci

Published: July 1962

The results of critical tests on methyridine in naturally parasitized sheep are given. The drug proved to be efficient against most species found in the small intestine. It was less effective against those in the large intestine. Against the abomasal worms, Haemonchus and Ostertagia, activity was generally poor. The drug appeared to show activity against lungworm and to reduce larval development in the faeces after dosing.

Background And Purpose: Control of nematode parasite infections relies largely on anthelmintic drugs, several of which act on nicotinic ACh receptors (nAChRs), and there are concerns about the development of resistance. There is an urgent need for development of new compounds to overcome resistance and novel anthelmintic drug targets. We describe the functional expression and pharmacological characterization of a homomeric nAChR, ACR-16, from a nematode parasite.

1. The development of resistance to all chemotherapeutic agents increases and needs to be addressed. We are interested in resistance in parasitic nematodes to the anthelmintic levamisole.

Host predisposition to trichuriasis: the mouse--T. muris model.

Parasitology

April 1989

Department of Zoology, University of Nottingham, University Park.

Predisposition to trichuriasis in mice is reflected in the inability of certain strains, or certain individuals within strains, to express protective immunity. Poor responders fail to expel worms and harbour chronic patent infections. The mechanisms underlying this phenomenon were studied in poor responder mice challenged after abbreviated or prolonged primary infections.
