Future of medication therapy management services in delivering patient-centered care.

Am J Health Syst Pharm

Clinical Pharmacology Services, Inc., USA.

Published: August 2007

Purpose: The scope of medication therapy management services (MTMS) is defined, opportunities for pharmacists to influence change in the pharmacy profession by embracing MTMS, current challenges in providing MTMS, possible solutions to these challenges, and the tipping point that MTMS represents to the pharmacy profession are discussed.

Summary: Pharmacist services include a spectrum of activities involving face-to-face interaction between a pharmacist and a patient to improve health outcomes, and MTMS is at the high end of this spectrum. MTMS can be provided to fee-for-service and managed care patients as well as to Medicare Part D enrollees. The pharmacy profession faces challenges in implementing MTMS, including inadequate pharmacist participation in and documentation of the value of MTMS. Developing practice models to increase pharmacist participation and participating in demonstration projects to document the value of MTMS are among the possible solutions to these challenges. The profession is poised for a radical change in practice because of growing recognition of the value of MTMS.

Conclusion: Provision of MTMS involves a patient-centered model for delivery of care. Demonstrating the value of MTMS to payers is among several strategies for effecting change in the pharmacy profession and improving patient outcomes.

Neuroprotective Actions of Cannabinoids in the Bovine Isolated Retina: Role of Hydrogen Sulfide.

Pharmaceuticals (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Texas Southern University, Houston, TX 77004, USA.

Both hydrogen sulfide and endocannabinoids can protect the neural retina from toxic insults under in vitro and in vivo conditions. The aim of the present study was two-fold: (a) to examine the neuroprotective action of cannabinoids [methanandamide and 2-arachidonyl glycerol (2-AG)] against hydrogen peroxide (HO)-induced oxidative damage in the isolated bovine retina and (b) to evaluate the role of endogenously biosynthesized hydrogen sulfide (HS) in the inhibitory actions of cannabinoids on the oxidative stress in the bovine retina. Isolated neural retinas from cows were exposed to oxidative damage using HO (100 µM) for 10 min.

Non-Viral Delivery Systems to Transport Nucleic Acids for Inherited Retinal Disorders.

Pharmaceuticals (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Pharmacy Sciences, School of Pharmacy and Health Professions, Creighton University, Omaha, NE 68178, USA.

Inherited retinal disorders (IRDs) represent a group of challenging genetic conditions that often lead to severe visual impairment or blindness. The complexity of these disorders, arising from their diverse genetic causes and the unique structural and functional aspects of retinal cells, has made developing effective treatments particularly challenging. Recent advancements in gene therapy, especially non-viral nucleic acid delivery systems like liposomes, solid lipid nanoparticles, dendrimers, and polymersomes, offer promising solutions.

Optimization of the Antibacterial Activity of a Three-Component Essential Oil Mixture from Moroccan , , and Using a Simplex-Centroid Design.

Pharmaceuticals (Basel)

January 2025

Laboratoire d'Amélioration des Productions Agricoles, Biotechnologie et Environnement (LAPABE), Faculté des Sciences, Université Mohammed Premier, Oujda 60000, Morocco.

Background/objectives: The rise of antibiotic-resistant pathogens has become a global health crisis, necessitating the development of alternative antimicrobial strategies. This study aimed to optimize the antibacterial effects of essential oils (EOs) from , , and , enhancing their efficacy through optimized mixtures.

Methods: This study utilized a simplex-centroid design to optimize the mixture ratios of EOs for maximal antibacterial and antioxidant effectiveness.
