Published: January 2008

Background: Intramedullary spinal cord abscesses are rare and can be potential harmful lesions that cause a variety of neurologic problems. It is a treatable cause of paraparesis; however, diagnosis is not often straightforward due to the indolent course and rarity of the disease.

Case Report: We report a case of a 32-month-old boy referred to our institution with a neglected intramedullary cord abscess after 6 months.

Conclusion: Strong clinical suspicion, in addition to prompt surgical drainage with proper antibiotic therapy, seems crucial in prevention of permanent neurological disability.

Introduction: Most patients with these injuries are taken to hospitals frequently for specialized orthopedic treatment. However, because quackery is a common practice in the many regions, it is common in underdeveloped nations, particularly in rural India, for these injuries to be initially overlooked. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of open intramedullary nailing in the treatment of patients with neglected bilateral fracture shaft femurs in terms of union achievement and functional outcomes.

Treatment of bone fractures are standardized according to the AO classification, which mainly refers to the mechanical stabilization required in a given situation but neglect individual differences due to patient's healing potential or accompanying diseases. Specially in elderly or immune-compromised patients, the complexity of individual constrains on a biological as well as mechanical level are hard to account for. Here, we introduce a novel framework that allows to predict bone regeneration outcome using combined proteomic and mechanical analyses in a computer model.

Background: Proximal humerus fractures are common fractures of the elderly population which can lead to long-term compromise of a patient's shoulder function. Closed reduction and internal fixation with intramedullary nailing is a well-established surgical technique yielding good outcomes, as perceived by patients, obtained via Patient-Reported Outcome Measures, and objectified by clinical shoulder testing. Apart from conventional range-of-motion testing and clinical shoulder tests, strength testing of the shoulder is a yet-neglected but meaningful and standardizable outcome parameter.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a serious condition resulting in inadequate acetabular development, distorted bone configuration, and substantially altered hip biomechanics. An extensive leg length discrepancy (LLD) is commonly encountered in such cases, making a total hip arthroplasty (THA) procedure extremely challenging. Although good results in terms of patients' satisfaction, implant survival rates and overall improved quality of life have been reported, complication rates are considerably higher than primary THA procedures performed for idiopathic osteoarthritis.
