Aim: To carry out a review of the definition and classification of cerebral palsy (CP) from a historical point of view and in the light of current knowledge.

Development: Defining and classifying CP in the medical literature have been difficult to achieve. The different definitions and classifications have represented a limitation when it comes to interpreting the results of epidemiological studies. The definitions do not specify any age limits as regards the moment the brain injury occurred or with respect to the onset of motor disorders or how severe such disorders must be in order to be considered as CP. Within the classifications there are significant inter-observer differences in the interpretation of certain terms, particularly in the topographical and pathophysiological classifications. It has only been in recent years that the first steps have been taken towards achieving greater consistency in the definition and classification of CP. The most recent definition proposed by the Executive Committee for the Definition and Classification of CP, in April 2005, partly satisfies the clinical demands but not those of epidemiological research; nevertheless, the classification of CP proposed here would be useful for both clinical and epidemiological purposes if a number of small modifications mainly concerning the search for causations were introduced.

Conclusions: The definition and classification of CP are a problem that has still not been solved. We recommend drawing up a complementary definition of CP, for epidemiological research purposes, obtained by international agreement.

Global insight into rare disease and orphan drug definitions: a systematic literature review.

BMJ Open

January 2025

Centre for Public Health, Institute of Clinical Sciences B, Royal Victoria Hospital, Queen's University Belfast School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences, Belfast, UK.

Objectives: This study sheds light on the available global definitions, classifications, and criteria used for rare diseases (RDs), ultrarare diseases (URDs), orphan drugs (ODs) and ultraorphan drugs (UODs) and provides insights into the rationale behind these definitions.

Design: A systematic literature review was conducted to identify existing definitions and the criteria used to define RDs, ODs and their subtypes.

Data Sources: Searches were performed in the PubMed/Medline, Embase, Scopus and Web of Science (Science and Social Sciences Citation Index) databases covering articles published from 1985 to 2021.

Purpose Of Review: Low back pain (LBP) is considered an important issue of public health, with annual prevalence estimations almost achieving 60% of the worldwide population. Available treatments have a limited impact on this condition, although they allow to alleviate pain and recover the patient's quality of life. This review aims to go deeper on the understanding of this condition, providing an updated, brief, and concise whole picture of this common musculoskeletal problem.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a major public health concern responsible for hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) worldwide. In Mozambique, HBsAg prevalence is high and endemic, and despite the strategies to mitigate the spread of the disease, the HCC incidence is still high and one of the highest in the world. There is still limited data on the serological profile and molecular epidemiology of HBV in Mozambique given the burden of this disease.
