Antimicrobial activity of some isoquinoline alkaloids.

Published: June 1991

The isoquinoline alkaloids are of great importance to humanity because of their medicinal value and different structure. During the last ten years, many isoquinoline alkaloids were isolated from Fumaria and Corydalis species growing in Turkey. There have been many researches on the antimicrobial activity of extracts of higher plants, but relatively few pure compounds have been investigated.

(+)/(-)-Corydecumbenpines A and B, two pairs of dimeric phthalide-benzophenanthridine alkaloids with cytotoxicity from Corydalis decumbens.

Phytochemistry

State Key Laboratory of Natural and Biomimetic Drugs, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Peking University, Beijing, 100191, China. Electronic address:

Four pairs of previously undescribed enantiomers, including two pairs of dimeric phthalide-benzophenanthridine alkaloid and two pairs phthalides derivatives, corydecumbenpines A-D, were isolated from the rhizomes of Corydalis decumbens. Their planar structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis including UV, IR, HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR. Optically pure compounds were obtained by chiral chromatography and their absolute configurations were determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and comparison of experimental and calculated ECD spectra.

Electronic address:

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a fatal disease in cats caused by feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV), has limited treatment options and lacks effective vaccines. Cepharanthine (CEP), a natural isoquinoline alkaloid, possesses many medicinal properties, including antiviral activities. However, the role of CEP in management of FIPV infection remains poorly understood.

Large variability in the alkaloid content of dietary supplements.

Department of Pharmacology and Vanderbilt Institute of Chemical Biology, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, TN, United States.

Introduction: Extracts from the rhizome of the traditional Chinese medicinal plant (CY) mediate a number of biologic effects that are associated with its content of isoquinoline alkaloids. CY alkaloids have shown analgesic, cardioprotective, and anti-addictive effects in animal models of disease. Since CY alkaloids are available to consumers as dietary supplements we analyzed the content of alkaloids in 14 products including open powders, capsules, and liquid formulations, capturing a majority of the products available online in the US.

The magnetization strategy of isoquinoline alkaloids has been successfully used in the extraction and isolation, but the effect of the magnetization on biological activities of those alkaloids still deserves further investigation. Therefore, the antibacterial, lipid-lowering and antioxidant activities of five isoquinoline alkaloids (berberine, tetrahydroberberine, palmatine, tetrahydropalmatine and tetrahydropapavine) before and after magnetization were compared in this study, and the results showed that the relevant activities were enhanced after magnetization. Additionally, among the five magnetic derivatives studied, berberine magnetic derivative ([Ber·H][FeCl]) had the best antibacterial effect on S.

Corynoline (COR) is an isoquinoline alkaloid derived from the traditional Chinese medicine Corydalis bungeana Turcz, known for its analgesic, antibacterial, neuroprotective, and osteoporosis-alleviating properties. However, its potential molecular effects against osteosarcoma (OS) remain unclear, warranting further investigation. This study demonstrated that COR inhibits OS cell proliferation and promotes apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner.
