Background: Needle insertion is an important procedure for the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. A prototype curved multi-tube device (CMTD) and system for performing computerized correction of path errors during needle insertion is described.

Methods: The CMTD provides two functional modes, the straight-needle mode and the curved-needle mode. This study describes the CMTD and path-error correction, using a prototype needle-insertion system in a trial with a simple water phantom.

Results: The needle insertion procedure was performed precisely in the centre of an ultrasound image. The CMTD functioned with the inner needle extending properly from its sleeve to correct path errors.

Conclusions: The path-error corrections by the CMTD in a needle-insertion system were shown. The system's computer processing can successfully determine the needle path from the ultrasound image and automatically guide the CMTD to the target.

Purpose: To investigate the feasibility of a robotic system with artificial intelligence-based lesion detection and path planning for CT-guided biopsy, compared to the conventional freehand technique.

Materials And Methods: Eight nodules within an abdominal phantom, incorporating the simulated vertebrae and ribs, were designated as targets. A robotic system was used for lesion detection, trajectory generation, and needle-holder positioning.

Department of Endocrinology, Shanghai Pudong Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, 201399, People's Republic of China.

Background: Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS) is a clinical assessment tool that enables trainers to observe medical students' procedural abilities in real-time clinical settings. It assesses students' knowledge application, decision-making, and skill proficiency during clinical tasks.

Methods: This study modifies the DOPS to evaluate the operation of insulin pumps (PUMP) and continuous glucose monitoring systems (CGMS) in diabetes management.

In diagnosing and treating prostate cancer the flexible bevel tip needle insertion surgical technique is commonly used. Bevel tip needles experience asymmetric loading on the needle's tip, inducing natural bending of the needle and enabling control mechanisms for precise placement of the needle during surgery. Several methods leverage the needles natural bending to provide autonomous control of needle insertion for accurate needle placement in an effort to reduce excess tissue damage and improve patient outcomes from needle insertion intraventions.

Background: Extended reality (XR) technologies are increasingly being used to reduce health and procedural anxieties. The global effectiveness of these interventions is uncertain, and there is a lack of understanding of how patient outcomes might vary between different contexts and modalities.

Objective: This research used panoramic meta-analysis to synthesize evidence across the diverse clinical contexts in which XR is used to address common outcomes of health and procedural anxiety.

Design and Evaluation of Augmented Reality-Enhanced Robotic System for Epidural Interventions.

Sensors (Basel)

December 2024

Surgical Performance Enhancement and Robotics (SuPER) Centre, Department of Surgery, McGill University, Montreal, QC H3A 0G4, Canada.

The epidural injection is a medical intervention to inject therapeutics directly into the vicinity of the spinal cord for pain management. Because of its proximity to the spinal cord, imprecise insertion of the needle may result in irreversible damage to the nerves or spinal cord. This study explores enhancing procedural accuracy by integrating a telerobotic system and augmented reality (AR) assistance.
