The aim of this study was to analyze the external morphology of the scutellum through optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in male specimens of Triatoma costalimai, T. delpontei, T. eratyrusiformis, T. matogrossensis, T. infestans melanosoma, T. sherlocki, T. tibiamaculata, and T. vandae. A total of 30 photographs of the scutellum were made. Magnification varied from 50X to 750X. Regarding depth and forms of the central depression, the heart-shaped form was predominant, with some exceptions, so that this shape appears to be a common characteristic for species of genus Triatoma Laporte, 1832. In T. eratyrusiformis, a kind of sensillum with important taxonomic value was observed. The different sizes and shapes of the designs found on the posterior process of the scutellum were also of important taxonomic interest. The study of the scutellum based on SEM showed valuable characteristics, allowing the use of this structure to aid the diagnosis of triatomine species. Thus, more specimens in subsequent studies and analyses of morphometric parameters should contribute to agreement on phylogenetic aspects in this genus. A Key to eight species of Triatoma based on male scutellar morphology is presented.

Cereal products contribute significantly to dietary intake of essential minerals. In wheat, iron and zinc are stored in specific grain structures including the aleurone, scutellum and embryo. Wheat cell walls are resistant to digestion in the human gastrointestinal tract and therefore this study investigated the hypothesis that physical disruption of the cell walls would increase the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of iron and zinc from wheat-based foods.

Article Synopsis
  • The GATA transcription factor gene pannier (pnr) is vital for several developmental processes in Drosophila, but its function in coleopteran insects, like the beetle Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata, has not been thoroughly explored.
  • Researchers identified two splicing variants of the pnr gene in H. vigintioctopunctata and performed analysis at various life stages, finding that RNA interference (RNAi) significantly impacted development, particularly affecting pupal morphometry and female oviposition.
  • Unlike findings in some ladybird species, silencing pnr in this beetle did not alter melanin synthesis, but did result in scutellum formation defects and issues

Article Synopsis
  • Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a widely used plastic, but its microplastics (MPs/NPs) pose increasing environmental threats that lack effective study methods.
  • This study introduces a new approach using functionalized superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (PET-fSPIONs) and magnetic resonance microimaging (µMRI) to track PET NP distribution in germinating wheat seeds.
  • Findings indicate significant accumulation of PET-fSPIONs in key seed areas and show effects on MRI relaxation times and lipid content, highlighting the method's ability to non-invasively monitor PET NP interactions in plant biology.

Epiphytic diatoms growing in Mediterranean seagrass meadows, particularly those of the genus , are abundant and ecologically significant, even in naturally acidified environments. One intriguing aspect of some benthic diatoms is their production of an unidentified cell-death-promoting compound, which induces destruction of the androgenic gland in Leach, 1816, a shrimp exhibiting protandric hermaphroditism, principally under normal environmental pH levels. The consumption of spp.
