Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) is a stress-response cytokine related to a wide variety of metabolic diseases. However, the impact of GDF15-specific genetic variants on the abovementioned conditions is poorly known. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of selected GDF15 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on metabolic disturbances and subclinical atherosclerosis.

Background: Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of programmed cell death, significantly impacts cancer, yet its link to prostate cancer (PCa) prognosis remains underexplored. This study aims to develop and validate a ferroptosis-related gene signature to predict PCa prognosis and immune microenvironment differences, potentially identifying therapeutic targets.

Methods: RNA-sequencing data of 478 PCa patients and corresponding clinical data were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database.

Identification of cytokine signatures in HIV‑infected individuals with and without co‑infection.

Division of Tropical and Infectious Disease, Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Padjadjaran/Hasan Sadikin Central Hospital, Bandung, West Java 40161, Indonesia.

Individuals with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are susceptible to immune system dysregulation, particularly during co-infection with (MTB). Although there is an association between cytokine profiles and HIV-MTB co-infection, little is known about the cytokine-related host immune response mechanism to HIV-MTB co-infection. Therefore, the present study aimed to analyze expression of cytokines IL-17A, IFN-γ, TNF, IL-2, IL-10, IL-6 and IL-4 in individuals with HIV-MTB co-infection.

Article Synopsis
  • A recent study explored the use of serum growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF15) as a biomarker to identify high-risk patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) who need closer follow-up for liver cancer.
  • Researchers analyzed GDF15 levels in over 500 MASLD patients and found that high levels were linked to increased liver cancer risk, regardless of fibrosis stage or standard risk indicators like the Fib-4 index.
  • The findings suggest that GDF15 could be a convenient and effective indicator for determining which MASLD patients should undergo regular monitoring for liver cancer, thus potentially improving patient outcomes.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) status strongly predicts positive clinical outcomes in patients with head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC); however, the potential reasons have not been fully elucidated. Here, we characterized the immune context in HPV+ and HPV- HNSCC by integrating scRNA-seq and bulk RNA-seq data. In scRNA-seq data, HPV + HNSCC displayed increased B cells, plasma cells, CD4 effector T cells, and decreased macrophages and mast cells.
