Published: July 2007

Two new isomalabaricane-type triterpenes, stellettins L (1) and M (2), and three new sterols (3-5) were isolated from the marine sponge Stelletta tenuis collected in the South China Sea. Chemical structures were established from spectroscopic data and comparison with known compounds. In addition, spectroscopic data reported for the known sterol 24-methylene-27-methylcholest-5-en-3beta-ol-7-one (6) were revised. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibited significant cytotoxic activity against stomach cancer (AGS) in vitro.

The marine sponge of the genus , , , and are characterized chemically by a variety of isomalabaricane triterpenes. This class of compounds drew spotlights in marine lead discovery due to their profound anti-proliferative properties. Further research on exploring its chemical diversity led to the identifications of two new isomalabaricane-type triterpenes rhabdastin H () and rhabdastin I ().

Three new isomalabaricane-type triterpenes named stellettins N (1), O (2) and P (3), together with four known compounds (4–7),were isolated from the CCl4 extract of the marine sponge Stelletta tenuis Lindgren. Compound 4 was reported as a natural α-pyrone for the first time, which had been synthesized from gibepyrone B, while 5 was found in the genus Stelletta for the first time. The structures of the new compounds were established on the basis of extensive spectroscopic data analysis including IR, MS, 1D and 2D NMR.

A chemical investigation of marine sponge Jaspis stellifera, collected from the South China Sea, led to the isolation of four new isomalabaricane-type triterpenoids, jaspiferins C-F (1-4). The structures of those compounds were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic methods. Jaspiferin C (1), which has the six-membered carbon ring at the side chain, was discovered for the first time from the isomalabaricane-type triterpenoids.
