This study evaluated the concentrations of tetracycline, erythromycin, and sulfonamide in beef, eggs, and honey products sold at grocery stores and whether standard cooking to 160 °F (71 °C) reduced the concentrations of antimicrobials spiked into the evaluated food products. In June 2021, the concentrations of selected antimicrobials in 65 samples (8 beef, 48 eggs, 9 honey samples) purchased from grocery stores within Knoxville, Tennessee, were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to assess the differences in the median tetracycline concentrations across food types, while the Mann-Whitney test was used to compare the erythromycin residue concentrations between beef and honey.

Trends in Urban Wild Meat Trade of Chelonians (Turtles and Tortoises) in the Peruvian Amazon.

Animals (Basel)

November 2024

Department of Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Environmental Sciences, University of Barcelona, Catalonia, 08028 Barcelona, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • Chelonians, like turtles, are crucial for nutrition and income in tropical rainforests, but urban trade threatens their wild populations, especially in the Northern Peruvian Amazon.
  • A study conducted over 526 days in Iquitos revealed a significant decline in urban chelonian trade (down 161.6%) from 2006 to 2018, with turtles being the most traded species.
  • The rising trade of river turtle eggs indicates a shift in sales priorities, which could enhance the conservation of adult turtles while potentially reducing the detrimental effects of meat sales on their populations.

Background: The Woven EndoBridge (WEB) is a treatment modality available for the treatment of intracranial aneurysms, specifically beneficial in wide-necked bifurcation aneurysms. Conventional sizing methods rely on the manipulation of aneurysm width and height measurements. This results in frequent need for re-sizing after initial WEB insertion attempts.

The increasing use of chiral agrochemicals sold as racemic formulations raises concern for the negative impacts that inactive enantiomers can have on aquatic life and human health. The present work just focuses on the determination of ten chiral pesticides in river water samples by applying a ferrofluid-based microextraction followed by their stereoselective liquid chromatography analysis. To develop the ferrofluid, magnetite nanoparticles were prepared and coated with oleic acid and then dispersed in a hydrophobic natural deep eutectic solvent (NaDES), composed of L-menthol and thymol (1:1).

Background: The optimal duration for dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) after stent-assisted coiling (SAC) of intracranial aneurysms is unclear. Longer-term therapy may reduce thrombotic complications but increase the risk of bleeding complications.

Methods: A retrospective review of prospectively maintained data at 12 institutions was conducted on patients with unruptured intracranial aneurysms who underwent SAC between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2020, and were followed ≥6 months postprocedure.
