There are multilevel intrications between nociceptive afferences and sympathetic efferences: anatomical vicinity in visceral innervation; systemic and local activation of the sympathetic efferences in response to nociceptive stimulation; major role of sympathetic activation in the perpetuation of sympathetic dystrophies. The analysis of a retrospective series of 10 patients suffering from algodystrophia revealed that epidural morphine administration had a beneficial effect only in those which were treated at an early stage of their illness. Despite epidural morphine has been claimed to be without effect on the efferent sympathetic tone in normal animals and individuals, it seems that in some pathologic states, the sympathetic output can be depressed. Recent anatomical and neurophysiological evidences argue for such a possibility.

The unique architecture of the liver consists of hepatic lobules, dividing the hepatic features of metabolism into 2 distinct zones, namely the pericentral and periportal zones, the spatial characteristics of which are broadly defined as metabolic zonation. R-spondin3 (Rspo3), a bioactive protein promoting the Wnt signaling pathway, regulates metabolic features especially around hepatic central veins. However, the functional impact of hepatic metabolic zonation, regulated by the Rspo3/Wnt signaling pathway, on whole-body metabolism homeostasis remains poorly understood.

Resistant hypertension is defined as office blood pressure >140/90 mm Hg with a mean 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure of >130/80 mm Hg in patients who are compliant with 3 or more antihypertensive medications. Those who persistently fail pharmaceutical therapy may benefit from interventional treatment, such as renal denervation. Sympathetic nervous activity in the kidney is a known contributor to increased blood pressure because it results in efferent and afferent arteriole vasoconstriction, reduced renal blood flow, increased sodium and water reabsorption, and the release of renin.

The current study aimed to propose a method to directly measure right cervical vagal nerve activity (cVNA) alongside renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) in conscious rats. The right cervical vagus nerve was surgically exposed and fitted with a bipolar electrode to record cVNA. A microcatheter was used to administer levobupivacaine to selectively block afferent cVNA.

The distribution of the common acupoints of acupuncture-moxibustion for gastrointestinal diseases conforms to the rule of the segmental homology of somatic afferent nerve-visceral nerve circuit at the spinal cord level. Acupuncture-moxibustion regulates the gastrointestinal function through the nerve-endocrine-immune system, and especially depending on the integrity of the structure and function of nervous system. The somatic afferent nerve-visceral nerve circuit plays an important role in the process of acupuncture and moxibustion for regulating the gastrointestinal function.

Anorectal neuropathy causes anorectal dysfunction, yet it is poorly recognized. This stems from both a lack of understanding of the extrinsic and intrinsic innervation of the anorectum and tools for evaluation of neuronal function. Our objective was to provide an improved understanding of the neuronal networks of the anorectum and discuss its functional significance.
