A 4-day-old girl with ventricular tachyarrhythmias, sinus bradycardia, and 2:1 atrioventricular block had prolongation of the QT interval. She was symptomatic with arching, gasping, and cyanosis presumably due to a life-threatening ventricular tachyarrhythmia such as torsades de pointes. Molecular genetic studies indicated a heterozygous, de novo, dominant negative mutation in hERG, a gene that encodes a protein in a potassium ion channel. The parents do not have the mutation. The patient's clinical scenario was produced by the convergence of 3 events: a de novo mutation occurred in hERG, the mutation was dominant negative, and the action of the mutation resulted in neonatal long QT syndrome. The child was treated aggressively and is doing well at age 6 years.

This study aimed to develop gastroretentive tablets based on mucoadhesive-floating systems with encapsulated gentian (, Gentianaceae) root extract to overcome the low bioavailability and short elimination half-life of gentiopicroside, a dominant bioactive compound with systemic effect. The formulation also aimed to promote the local action of the extract in the stomach. Tablets were obtained by direct compression of sodium bicarbonate (7.

Ecosystem functioning and management are primarily concerned with addressing climate change and biodiversity loss, which are closely linked to carbon stock and species diversity. This research aimed to quantify forest understory (shrub and herb) diversity, tree biomass and carbon sequestration in the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary. Using random sampling methods, data were gathered from six distinct forest communities.

Environmental factors control the accumulation of aboveground biomass (AB) in tropical forests, along with the role of AB in climate change mitigation. As such, the objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of factors such as forest type, succession, abundance of individuals, species richness, height, diameter, texture, and soil nutrient levels on the AB in mature and postmining forests in Chocó, Colombia. Five plots each were set up in primary and postmining forests with 15 and 30 years of regeneration, in which the amount of AB was measured and related to the environmental factors.

Prior to implementing watershed-wide projects to reduce the impacts of agriculture on regional streams and rivers, stream habitats and benthic aquatic macroinvertebrate communities were assessed at 15 sites on the South Branch Root River and its major tributaries in southeastern Minnesota, USA. Triplicate kick-net samples were collected from each site during three time periods (1998, 1999, 2006/2008) and stream habitats were inventoried within 150 m long sections at each site. In total, 26,760 invertebrates representing 84 taxa were collected and used to rate stream sites using a regional multi-metric benthic index of biotic integrity (BIBI).

Pathogenic variants in , encoding dynamin-like protein-1 (DRP1), cause a lethal encephalopathy. DRP1 defective function results in altered mitochondrial networks, characterized by elongated/spaghetti-like, highly interconnected mitochondria. We validated in yeast the pathogenicity of a de novo variant identified by whole exome sequencing performed more than 10 years after the patient's death.
