A methodology for the synthesis of monodisperse homoconjugated oligomers (dimer, trimer, and tetramer) derived from cofacial 7,7-diphenylnorbornane (DPN) is described. Extended aromatic homoconjugation is observed in these oligomers as revealed by the electronic spectra. The effective homoconjugation length (EHL) is in the range of 4-5 DPN subunits.

Intramolecular singlet fission (iSF) is an efficient strategy of multiexciton generation via a singlet exciton splitting into a correlated triplet pair in one organic molecule with more than two chromophores. Propeller-shaped iptycene-linked triisopropylsilyl(TIPS)-ethynyl functionalized pentacene oligomers (pent-monomer, pent-dimer, and pent-trimer) were synthesized, and the iSF dynamics of pent-dimer and -trimer were monitored by a visible-near-IR transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy. Quantum yields of the triplet pair, ∼80%, of both estimated by near-IR TA spectral analysis are in good agreement with the results of global analysis and triplet sensitization experiments.

Electron delocalization in homoconjugated 7,7-diarylnorbornane systems: a computational and experimental study.

A joint computational-experimental study has been carried out to analyze the homoconjugative interactions in 7,7-diarylnorbornane (DPN) derivatives. The experimentally observed new bands in their UV/Vis have been accurately assigned by means of TD-DFT calculations. Both experimental data and computations show that aromatic homoconjugation in acyclic systems is an effective mechanism for electron delocalization that resembles the situation described for polyphenylenes and polyenes.

1,5- and 1,8-bis(bifluorenyl)anthracene were synthesized and converted to their corresponding bis(bifluorenyl)triptycenes and bis(bifluorenyl)-9,10-dihydroanthracenes. Analysis of their optical properties shows no feature of extended conjugation in the triptycene pair. The electronic spectra of the triptycene and dihydroanthracene pairs are in fact superimposable.
