Prefrontal 5α-reductase 2 mediates male-specific acute stress response.

Sci Adv

A key response to acute stress is the increased brain synthesis of the neurosteroid allopregnanolone (AP). Although the rate-limiting step of this reaction is catalyzed by 5α-reductase (5αR), the role of its two primary isoenzymes, 5αR1 and 5αR2, in stress reactivity remains unclear. Here, we found that acute stress led to increased levels of 5αR2, but not 5αR1, in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) of male, but not female, rats.

The present study describes the differentiation process of male germ cells in Octopus vulgaris, the morphology of sperm in the testis and spermatophore, and the sperm released after the spermatophoric reaction. During spermatogenesis, the male sperm cell gradually elongates from a round shape, with cytoplasm shifting toward the head and the acrosome forming. Additionally, in the spermatid stage, the flagellum develops within the posterior nuclear channel and extends outside the cytoplasm.

Purpose: A paradoxical increase in GH after oral glucose load (GH-Par) characterizes about one-third of acromegaly patients and is associated with a better response to first-generation somatostatin receptor ligands (fg-SRLs). Pasireotide is typically considered as a second-/third-line treatment. Here, we investigated the predictive role of GH-Par in pasireotide response and adverse event development.

Human-induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) technology has been applied in pathogenesis studies, drug screening, tissue engineering, and stem cell therapy, and patient-specific hiPSC-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) have shown promise in disease modeling, including diabetic cardiomyopathy. High glucose (HG) treatment induces lipotoxicity in hiPSC-CMs, as evidenced by changes in cell size, beating rate, calcium handling, and lipid accumulation. Empagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor, effectively mitigates the hypertrophic changes, abnormal calcium handling, and contractility impairment induced by HG.

Unlocking a Decade of Research on Embryo-Derived Extracellular Vesicles: Discoveries Made and Paths Ahead.

Stem Cell Rev Rep

January 2025

Department of Internal Medicine, Reproduction and Population Health, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ghent, Salisburylaan 133, Merelbeke, B-9820, Belgium.

Over the past decade, research on embryo-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) has unveiled their critical roles in embryonic development and intercellular communication. EVs secreted by embryos are nanoscale lipid bilayer vesicles that carry bioactive cargo, including proteins, lipids, RNAs, and DNAs, reflecting the physiological state of the source cells. These vesicles facilitate paracrine and autocrine signaling, influencing key processes such as cell differentiation, embryo viability, and endometrial receptivity.
