The catalytic activity of the terdentate complex [RuCl(CNN)(dppb)] (A) [dppb=Ph(2)P(CH(2))(4)PPh(2); HCNN=6-(4'-methylphenyl)-2-pyridylmethylamine] in the transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone (S) with 2-propanol has been found to be dependent on the base concentration. The limit rate has been observed when NaOiPr is used in high excess (A/base molar ratio > 10). The amino-isopropoxide species [Ru(OiPr)(CNN)(dppb)] (B), which forms by reaction of A with sodium isopropoxide via displacement of the chloride, is catalytically active. The rate of conversion of acetophenone obeys second-order kinetics v=k[S][B] with the rate constants in the range 218+/-8 (40 degrees C) to 3000+/-70 M(-1) s(-1) (80 degrees C). The activation parameters, evaluated from the Eyring equation are DeltaH(++)=14.0+/-0.2 kcal mol(-1) and DeltaS(++)=-3.2 +/-0.5 eu. In a pre-equilibrium reaction with 2-propanol complex B gives the cationic species [Ru(CNN)(dppb)(HOiPr)](+)[OiPr](-) (C) with K approximately 2x10(-5) M. The hydride species [RuH(CNN)(dppb)] (H), which forms from B via beta-hydrogen elimination process, catalyzes the reduction of S and, importantly, its activity increases by addition of base. The catalytic behavior of the hydride H has been compared to that of the system A/NaOiPr (1:1 molar ratio) and indicates that the two systems are equivalent.

The azahelicenes are structurally fascinating and practically useful chiral scaffolds, but their synthesis, especially in a catalytically asymmetric manner, is rather challenging. Herein, we report a CPA-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation process, which enables a rapid kinetic resolution of aza[6]helicenes. The established strategy provides facile access to enantioenriched aza[6]helicenes and tetrahydro[6]helicenes from easily available starting materials.

Catalysis activity and chemoselectivity control with the ligand in Ru-H pincer complexes.

(PhPNP)Ru(H)(Cl)(CO) serves as a precatalyst to a variety of important catalytic transformations but most improvements have been restricted to the replacement of the CO ligand to the hydride or changing the Ph groups of the pincer for other aryl or alkyl groups. The ligand to the hydride is often another hydride and studies that utilize other ligands in catalysis are limited. In this work, we synthesized a series of [(PhPNP)Ru(H)(CO)(L)][BPh] complexes bearing isonitrile, PMe, or a N-heterocyclic ligand to the Ru-H.

The layer-stacking mode of a two-dimensional (2D) material plays a dominant role either in its topology or properties, but remains challenging to control. Herein, we developed alkali-metal ion-regulating synthetic control on the stacking structure of a vinylene-linked covalent triazine framework (termed spc-CTF) for improving hydrogen peroxide (HO) photoproduction. Upon the catalysis of EtONa in Knoevenagel polycondensation, a typical eclipsed stacking mode (spc-CTF-4@AA) was built, while a staggered one (spc-CTF-4@AB) was constructed using LiOH.

In biological systems, heme-copper oxidase (HCO) enzymes play a crucial role in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), where the pivotal O-O bond cleavage of the (heme)Fe-peroxo-Cu intermediate is facilitated by active-site (peroxo core) hydrogen bonding followed by proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) from a nearby (phenolic) tyrosine residue. A useful approach to comprehend the fundamental relationships among H-bonding/proton/H-atom donors and their abilities to induce O-O bond homolysis involves the investigation of synthetic, bioinspired model systems where the exogenous substrate properties (such as p and bond dissociation energy (BDE)) can be systematically altered. This report details the reactivity of a heme-peroxo-copper HCO model complex (LS-4DCHIm) toward a series of substituted catechol substrates that span a range of p and O-H bond BDE values, exhibiting different reaction mechanisms.
