Trophic factors, such as neurotrophins, are fundamental for cellular processes including differentiation, growth, survival, and regeneration. These molecules exhibit significant morphological and phylogenetic conservation throughout the animal kingdom, indicating conserved functions. In fish, the oldest and most diverse group of vertebrates, neurotrophins, and their receptors play pivotal roles not only within the central nervous system but also in various peripheral tissues.

Adropin, a peptide hormone encoded by the ENHO gene is expressed in various tissues including the brain. Accumulating evidence from in vivo and in vitro studies highlights adropin's pivotal role in modulating carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Notably, circulating adropin levels are lower in overweight and obese humans and experimental interventions involving adropin overexpression or synthetic administration demonstrate promising outcomes in mitigating obesity-related metabolic abnormalities and preventing weight gain.

The dual reactivity of boron compounds as Lewis acids and electron donors has spurred the development of a metallomimetic chemistry of boron compounds as a topical research theme. In this work we elaborate on the reaction of specially-designed diborane(4) compounds with quinones, as a prime example showing their dual (metallomimetic) chemistry as a Lewis acid and electron donor. The quinone is first coordinated to the diborane and then reduced by intramolecular electron transfer from the B-B bond to a quinone π* orbital.

Background: Bowel trauma, encompassing injuries to the small and large intestine, represents a significant medical challenge due to its potential for morbidity and mortality. Management of bowel injuries remains surgical, but multiple factors influence the outcome in these patients. This study provides an in-depth analysis of the high-risk features of hollow visceral trauma in the ICU setting and the corresponding mortality rates, shedding light on the critical factors that influence outcomes in these cases.
