Partnership as a means for reaching special populations: evaluating the NCI's CIS Partnership Program.

J Cancer Educ

The Cancer Information Service, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD 20892-8322, USA.

Published: October 2007

Background: The National Cancer Institute's (NCI's) Cancer Information Service (CIS) Partnership Program involves collaboration with over 900 organizations and coalitions serving minority and medically underserved populations. Cancer Information Service collaborations are categorized into three types: networking, educational program, and program development partnerships.

Methods: A survey of CIS partnership organizations (n = 288).

Results: Most respondents reported that partnerships with CIS are collaborative and make good use of their organization's skills and resources, and most perceive that the benefits of partnership outweigh any drawbacks. More than one-quarter say partnerships have not done a good job evaluating collaborative activities. Results vary among three types of partnerships.

Conclusions: Evaluation of the CIS Partnership Program presents an opportunity to examine how a large-scale and multi-faceted partnership effort has been implemented, how it is evaluated, and initial indicators of program success. Organizations, health professionals, and community leaders interested in effective partnerships can use these findings to strengthen collaborations and maximize outcomes.

Background: Head-on-head impacts are a risk factor for concussion, which is a concern for sports. Computer vision frameworks may provide an automated process to identify head-on-head impacts, although this has not been applied or evaluated in rugby.

Methods: This study developed and evaluated a novel computer vision framework to automatically classify head-on-head and non-head-on-head impacts.

The protective effect of naturally acquired humoral immunity against human papillomavirus (HPV) infection remains unclear. To investigate the role of infection-induced antibodies on HPV detection in heterosexual partners, we used data from 392 unvaccinated couples (females aged 18-25 years attended up to six visits over 2 years; males aged 17-37 years attended up to two visits 4 months apart) enrolled (2005-2011) in Montreal. Genital and blood samples were HPV DNA genotyped and tested for L1 antibody titers of 14 HPV genotypes.

Background: Loss to follow-up (LTFU) of patients with presumed tuberculosis (TB) before completing the diagnostic process (pre-diagnosis LTFU) and before initiating treatment for those diagnosed (pre-treatment LTFU) is a challenge in the realization of the End TB Strategy. We assessed the proportion of pre-diagnosis and pre-treatment LTFU and associated factors among patients with presumed TB and those diagnosed in the selected health facilities.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study involving a review of routinely collected data from presumptive, laboratory and TB treatment registers from January 2019 to December 2022.

Background: Gabapentinoids are increasingly prescribed in inflammatory arthritis (IA), despite no trial evidence for efficacy at managing pain in this population. Observational studies in non-IA populations suggest gabapentinoids are associated with fractures but are limited by methodological heterogeneity/potential residual confounding. Patients with IA generally have an increased risk of fracture so may be particularly vulnerable.
