Models wagging the dog: are circuits constructed with disparate parameters?

Published: August 2007

In a recent article, Prinz, Bucher, and Marder (2004) addressed the fundamental question of whether neural systems are built with a fixed blueprint of tightly controlled parameters or in a way in which properties can vary largely from one individual to another, using a database modeling approach. Here, we examine the main conclusion that neural circuits indeed are built with largely varying parameters in the light of our own experimental and modeling observations. We critically discuss the experimental and theoretical evidence, including the general adequacy of database approaches for questions of this kind, and come to the conclusion that the last word for this fundamental question has not yet been spoken.

Boomerasking: Answering your own questions.

J Exp Psychol Gen

Department of Strategy and Organisational Behaviour, Imperial College London.

Humans spend much of their lives in conversation, where they tend to hold many simultaneous motives. We examine two fundamental desires: to be responsive to a partner and to disclose about oneself. We introduce one pervasive way people attempt to reconcile these competing goals--a sequence in which individuals first pose a question to their conversation partner ("How was your weekend?"), let their partner answer, and then answer the question themselves ("Mine was amazing!").

Background: Early life-course exposome, including area-based social disadvantage, may influence the development of cognitive reserve, thereby impacting later-life incidence of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD). The primary goal of this scoping review is to evaluate the extent of literature examining early-life exposure to area-based disadvantage and its association with structural neuroanatomical differences. A secondary goal is to examine the commonalities in brain regions impacted as well as the components of the exposure-metrics utilized to study the social exposome.

Glassy Dynamics and Local Crystalline Order in Two-Dimensional Amorphous Silica.

Dipartimento di Fisica, Università di Trieste, Strada Costiera 11, 34151 Trieste, Italy.

We reassess the modeling of amorphous silica bilayers as a 2D classical system whose particles interact with an effective pairwise potential. We show that it is possible to reparametrize the potential developed by Roy, Heyde, and Heuer to quantitatively match the structural details of the experimental samples. We then study the glassy dynamics of the reparametrized model at low temperatures.

Background: The myelin sheath around axons is of fundamental importance for signal transduction. Myelin is reduced in white matter hyperintensities (WMH), which occur in both small vessel disease (SVD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), giving rise to the question to what extent myelin is reduced in these diseases. Here, we employed an advanced MRI based method to assess myelin independently from a major confounding factor, i.
