Ocular carteolol (Mikelan), Teoptic, Ocupress) is a nonselective beta-adrenoceptor antagonist with intrinsic sympathomimetic activity (ISA). Ocular carteolol effectively reduces intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma (OAG) or ocular hypertension (OH). Twice-daily administration of standard carteolol has generally similar IOP-lowering efficacy to other ocular beta-adrenoceptor antagonists such as timolol, betaxolol and metipranolol in patients with OAG or OH. In addition, long-term treatment with carteolol has similar efficacy to timolol and betaxolol in terms of reducing IOP and maintaining visual fields in patients with newly diagnosed primary OAG (POAG). The new long-acting formulation of once-daily carteolol has equivalent efficacy to the standard formulation of carteolol administered twice daily in patients with OAG or OH. Both the standard and long-acting formulations of ocular carteolol are generally well tolerated in terms of topical adverse effects involving the eyes or systemic adverse effects involving the cardiovascular system. Thus, twice-daily carteolol is a well established option in the treatment of glaucoma and OH, and the new once-daily formulation of long-acting carteolol offers similar efficacy and tolerability with a potential for improved patient adherence.

Background: Oculocutaneous albinism is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by congenital melanin deficiency, resulting in hypopigmentation of the eyes, hair, and skin. This study included a Chinese family with an oculocutaneous albinism pedigree, in which the proband presented with oculocutaneous albinismcombined with secondary angle closure, which has been rarely reported in previous literature. This article primarily focused on the clinical and genetic examination results of this patient and provided recommendations for ophthalmologist to treat patients with oculocutaneous albinism in clinical practice.

Background/objective: The association between antiglaucoma medications and the development of ocular pseudopemphigoid (OPP) has been described; however, the independent risk of each medication has not been quantified.
Methods: Case/non-case analyses were performed in the FDA Adverse Events Reporting System (FAERS) using data from 2010-2020 to examine the reporting odds ratio (ROR) signal for OPP for all classes of antiglaucoma medications under multiple conditions: (i) comparison to all other drugs in FAERs, (ii) comparison to other antiglaucoma medications, (iii) comparison to vehicle/hydrating eye drops with cases of OPP and (iv) comparison to vehicle/hydrating eyedrops with and without cases of OPP to control for topical irritant and preservative effects.
