Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) features of elastofibroma dorsi (EFD) in a 56-year-old woman were evaluated. The patient presented with 5 cm soft tissue mass located between the inferior part of scapula and the chest wall. FNA smears were hypercellular, characterized by a mixture of uniform spindle cells, mature adipocytes, and collagen tissue fragments in varying proportions.

Elastofibroma is a rare benign, solid, ill-defined and slow-growing soft tissue lesion that typically arises between the tip of scapula and chest wall of elderly. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is a commonly used technique to definitively diagnose the condition. However, the collagenous nature of the mass often results in a paucicellular FNA smear, resulting in a false-negative report.

Elastofibroma dorsi (EFD) is a relatively rare soft tissue mass, probably of reactive nature. The lesion is typically located near the inferior margin of the scapula or between the inferior part of scapula and the chest wall in elderly women. Although location of the tumor together with the age/sex of the patients and radiologic findings is often suggestive of the diagnosis, tissue examination has been considered necessary to confirm the diagnosis.

Background: Cytological findings of elastofibroma have rarely been reported and, to the best of our knowledge, have been illustrated in only 4 patients in the English language literature.

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) and scrape smears in 5 cases of elastofibroma.

Results: All the lesions were typically located between the rib cage and the scapula.
