Objective: To explore the association between genetic polymorphisms of DNA repair genes XRCC1, XRCC3 and susceptibility to chronic benzene poisoning.

Methods: A case-control study was conducted. Eighty patients with chronic benzene poisoning and 62 workers occupationally exposed to benzene who were engaged in the same working time and job title as patients were investigated. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragments length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) was used to detect the single nucleotide polymorphisms on C26304T, G27466A, G28152A, G36189A of XRCC1 and C18067T of XRCC3. The relationship between them and latency of chronic benzene poisoning was analyzed by Kaplan-Meier method.

Results: A correlation for XRCC3 18067C/T compared with C/C genotype was found (OR=0.233, 95% CI 0.085 approximately 0.639, P=0.0046). Patients who were XRCC1 27466G/G homozygous wild genotype developed chronic benzene poisoning average 6 years later than those had homozygous (27466A/A) or heterozygous (27466G/A) mutant alleles.

Conclusion: Subjects with XRCC3 18067T variant allele are tolerance sub-group to benzene poisoning. Patients carrying XRCC1 27466 G/G genotype develop chronic benzene poisoning later.

Background: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a significant public health burden. Emerging evidence links volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as benzene to endocrine disruption and metabolic dysfunction. However, the effects of chronic environmentally relevant VOC exposures on metabolic health are still emerging.

The hematopoietic system is the primary target of benzene exposure. Whether peripheral blood miRNA can serve as sensitive biomarkers for benzene-induced hematopoietic damage has attracted considerable attention. This study focuses on exploring the role of miR-451a and miR-486-5p in benzene-induced erythroid damage and assessing their potential as biomarkers of benzene-induced hematotoxicity.

Benzene is a crucial industrial hydrocarbon, posing significant health risks due to its toxic metabolites like hydroquinone (HQ). This study investigates the role of clusterin (CLU) in benzene toxicity by analyzing its protein and mRNA levels, as well as the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax, to evaluate the feasibility of CLU as a biomarker for chronic benzene poisoning. HL-60 cells were induced to differentiate into neutrophil-like cells using 1% Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO).

Gas stations are one of the sources of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) and polyromantic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The present study was conducted with the aim of evaluating the level of breathing exposure of gas station workers to BTEX, PAHs and oxidative stress caused by exposure to these compounds in Karaj city. Oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS) is one of the mechanisms involved in the toxicity caused by exposure to gas vapors.

Article Synopsis
  • - Brazil’s gas stations operate with attendants filling fuel, exposing them to harmful substances known as BTEX, which can lead to serious health issues, including bone marrow degeneration and weakened immune systems.
  • - This systematic review analyzed 1,086 articles on biomonitoring gas station workers, identifying 13 key studies that showcase advanced monitoring technologies like immunophenotyping and molecular cytogenetics, along with a focus on the health impacts of benzene exposure.
  • - The review concludes that gas station workers are at risk and need ongoing health monitoring due to potential early signs of benzene-related toxicity, but there is no established standard for measuring health indicators effectively.
