Microparticles or biological cells mixed in water were separated using the combination of an electrical force due to dielectrophoresis and a mechanical one generated in an evaporating droplet. Micropatterned electrodes of Au were fabricated on the silicon dioxide layer and were used to generate dielectrophoresis. Polystyrene particles, red blood cells. and E. coli were used as separating objects. Microparticles and biological cells were separated by adjusting the amplitude and frequency of the applied voltage. Although the mechanical force was enough to transport the particles to the boundary of the droplet, nevertheless, it could not detach the particles trapped at the electrode. Based on this work, the microparticles and biological cells can be separated, controlled, and sensed without using a liquid pumping unit.

Background: Fractionation of microalgal cells has important applications in producing pharmaceuticals and treating diseases. Multiple types of microalgal cells generally coexist in the oceans or lakes and are easily contaminated by microplastics and bacteria. Therefore, it is of paramount significance to develop an effective fractionation approach for microalgal cells for biological applications.

The anti-Stokes emission of photon upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) facilitates their use as labels for ultrasensitive detection in biological samples as infrared excitation does not induce autofluorescence at visible wavelengths. The detection of extremely low-abundance analytes, however, remains challenging as it is impossible to completely avoid nonspecific binding of label conjugates. To overcome this limitation, we developed a novel hybridization complex transfer technique using UCNP labels to detect short nucleic acids directly without target amplification.

Aortic valve calcification results from degenerative processes associated with several pathologies. These processes are influenced by age, chronic inflammation, and high concentrations of phosphate ions in the plasma, which contribute to induce mineralization in the aortic valve and deterioration of cardiovascular health. Environmental factors, such as wood smoke that emits harmful and carcinogenic pollutants, carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxide (NO), as well as other reactive compounds may also be implicated.

Inflammatory skin diseases comprise a group of skin conditions characterized by damage to skin function due to overactive immune responses. These disorders not only impair the barrier function of the skin but also deteriorate the quality of life and increase the risk of psychiatric issues. Here, a low-modulus phosphatidylserine-exposing microvesicle (deformed PSV, D-PSV) was produced, characterized, and evaluated for its potential therapeutic function against skin diseases.

Background: The multifunctional cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) plays a pivotal role in chronic and acute inflammatory responses, underscoring the importance of accurately determining IL-6 levels for early diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of inflammation.
Results: This study developed a versatile and innovative single-particle surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensing platform for the precise and sensitive quantification of IL-6 in complex samples using a novel one-pot synthesized, silver ions-doped three-dimensional porous gold microparticles (PGMs) with abundant hot spots for robust SERS enhancement. By rationally designing rich cytosine-Ag-cytosine base pairs between IL-6 aptamers and complementary chains on the PGMs, we harnessed the SERS-enhancing effect to achieve highly sensitive and specific IL-6 quantification within a wide range of 10 to 10 mg/mL and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.
