Introduction: The model of early assistance implemented in our country is defined and developed in the White Paper on Early Intervention (Libro Blanco de Atencion Temprana). This model refers to a set of interventions aimed at children with neurodevelopmental problems between 0 and 6 years of age. Aims and development. The aim of this review is to explain the biological foundations underlying the theoretical arguments in favour of intervention and to analyse the different techniques that are applied to optimise the development of children with different kinds of disabilities.

Conclusions: Although strong theoretical arguments have been put forward to defend early intervention, no solid conclusions can be drawn as far as its effectiveness is concerned because of the diversity of intervention techniques, the lack of homogeneity in treatments and the variety of problems that are included under the concept of neurodevelopmental disorders.
