The paucity of data on the haematological profile of Ethiopian children prompted this survey. In October and November, 1987, a survey of haematocrit levels utilizing capillary blood and morphological studies on blood films by means of the Wright stain was conducted in the peri-urban community of Koladiba in Northwestern Ethiopia. All but 21 children (0.5-6 years) in the community participated. The mean and median haematocrit levels in children 0.5-6 years was 38% each with a range of 26-52%. Lowest haematocrit was found between 1-2 years of age. The 3rd and 97th percentile values were 31-45% and identical with the mean +/- 2 S.D. values. On a third of the children (251), blood film studies were done and 20% had microcytic hypochromic red blood cells. When an altitude corrected cut-off point of 38% was employed to define anaemia, the prevalence rate was 47.2%, the highest rate (60%) in children 1-2 years. However, use of a cut-off point based on the third percentile or +/- 2 SD (31%), resulted in an underestimation of anaemia rates by 40%. The findings of this study are consistent with previous reports on anaemia rates and haematocrit levels in Ethiopian children residing in a similar environment. Although the iron content of the Ethiopian diet is one of the highest in the world, nutritional anaemia is a public health problem. Intervention measures using iron supplementation and nutrition education through existing primary health care network are recommended.

Background: This study investigates the correlation between the difference in hematocrit (HCT) and serum albumin (ALB) levels (HCT-ALB), muscle tissue oxygen saturation (SmtO2), capillary refill time (CRT), and blood lactate (Lac) with the severity of renal function damage and prognosis in patients with septic shock.
Methods: Conducted from February 2022 to February 2024, this study included 116 septic shock patients treated at the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University. Patients were divided into groups based on whether they developed acute kidney injury: 40 patients were included in the acute kidney injury group, and the remaining 76 were placed in the non-kidney injury group.
Angiotensin II (Ang II) is the most active peptide hormone produced by the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). Genetic deletion of genes that ultimately restrict Ang II formation has been shown to result in marked anemia in mice. In this study, adult mice with a genetic deletion of the RAS precursor protein angiotensinogen (Agt-KO) were used.

Recent investigations have suggested that increased insight may be gained by monitoring alterations of redox state in response to exercise and hypoxia and to monitor redox trajectories in disease settings. Anaemia is a prevalent complication in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) undergoing haemodialysis. This study evaluates the accuracy of the Alio SmartPatch™, a non-invasive remote monitoring device, in measuring haemoglobin (Hb) and haematocrit (Hct) levels in haemodialysis patients by comparing its results with standard blood-based laboratory methods. The results from 116 patients across multiple sites in the USA and the Kingdom of Jordan show that SmartPatch measurements align closely with standard blood-based laboratory methods, meeting clinically acceptable limits of agreement.
